A buddy of mine took a day trip to the states and being a fellow outdoorsman he picked us up a pair of wire saws.It looks like an assasins choke wire. Two metal bars with wire strung between them.I asked him if he found it in the wise guy isle of the hardware store.
So anyway We decided to give them a try.I wrapped mine around a small tree and began to cut.To my amazement it didn't cut so much as it created a tremendous ammount of heat.So I piled some grass and twigs arround the tree and began to cut again. Before I knew it I had a fire.Even more amazing was the fact that it was raining at the time.
Now instead of a saw I have a fire starter that works well in both wet and dry conditions.

Are you sure it wasn,t the pull cord on a chainsaw ?

Where did you pick up the saw ? sounds like a handy piece of gear .

I've used a cheap one of these with some success, and heard mixed reviews from others regarding their cutting ability. Now fire-making...that's a neat idea!

I'm curious about how you set things up to create and catch a spark in the rain.

My friend picked them up in a hardware store somewere in maine.I think they're used for plumbing not wood but what the heck if it works go with it.
To answer the second question once I saw the smoke comming out of the tree I skinned a paper birtch and found some dry bark and crammed it into the gap I cut into the tree. Then I began to cut over the bark really fast.(don't get me wrong there are easier ways to start a fire)Had I been prepaired for this outcome I would have collected more fuel and got a real good fire started.
