Wire saws?

I have a heavy-duty wire saw that I bought years ago. It's one of the strong ones that actually do what they're supposed to do. I took it out and tested it a few times, then put it in my PSK. I use my Silky saw for actual cutting but, if I needed to, I know I could rely on my wire saw. Like has already been mentioned, it's not meant to take the place of a full size saw, but it's a lot better than nothing for smaller tasks.

Played with one until it broke. I think all the strength claims is just stating the break strength of the wires themselves. It is not taking into account the actual use as a saw and whether the wires have been bent, twisted or gotten stuck in an object.

Just found my "LifeKnife Commando" knife from the mid 1980's (parent's garage :)), it still has the wire saw inside the grip... wonder if it would still work, or if the bends have taken a "set" and will snap on me.

Guilty as charged! :)

I've tried to use wire saws in the past, and either I had a bad saw, bad technique, or both. I tried it with my fingers through the rings & with sticks through the rings, and I couldn't get it to cut for squat. It either bound up and caught, or didn't make any headway. Not to mention the rings almost giving way. I guess if you have the patience, you could cut roundish objects like bones or pvc or copper pipe if you had to.

Maybe others have better luck/skills/patience than I did!

this is why these things gain a bad rep, because most people dont know how to use them.....they are never meant to be used by pulling on the rings....i guess that isnt isnt what you did, sorry for the missunderstanding....but for everybody else with wire saws, DONT PULL ON THE RINGS! haha

this is a great vid showing whats up with wire saws! enjoy....

What you quoted me as saying, I did not say. Someone else said it. You need to learn to use the quote feature a bit better. The first sentence in that quote, I did say, the rest of it is from another Gent in this thread. Please edit it to reflect that.

yep i figured it out now.....there was some erroneous quote coding at the top of his post...which screwed up my quote of him......haha that took me a bit i was confused!

Don knows what he's doing.

I was the one who didn't know how to use the saw... you accidentally quoted me quoting him. I think I screwed up the html tag somehow.

Anyway, that vid was helpful. I clearly had no idea how to use the wire saw properly. It always looks much simpler & easier when someone uses the right technique.

That's a can of worms! :D

If you ever give them a second chance, go slow with them. I think some people just want to GO GO GO GO GO! And they won't hold up, you know? It's a tool, an interesting and valuable one at times, but it has its limitations.

I wonder if the swivels on the Pro Force saw adds to its "strength" - helping prevent twisting and binding?

The directions on mine specifically state to pull on the rings.

And when you are talking about something that only costs a few bucks it would not be in the company's best interests to tell you how to use their product in such a way that you didn't come back for another one in quite a while. :)

I mean, that's the only way I can explain it buddy!
