Hey Guys,

I picked a motor at a yard sale the yesterday and I was wondering if someone can help me with the wiring. I have never done anything like this. Anyways its a Westinghouse 1/8 HP motor and it has two red wires coming out of the side.
Thanks for your time and help.

I appreciate everyone who has looked at my question, But I plan on starting my project soon and I have not been able to find anything on how to wire up this motor! So any info would be much appreciated! Again, the motor has two red wires coming out of it and that's all. Thank you for your time and help.

why waste time messing with a low hp motor? the only thing a motor that size will run is a small blower.

Where are you in Virginia, and how old are you? Not really any info in your profile.

If there are only two wires from the motor, they are probably the AC power wires. Without a photo of the motor, wires, and info plate, it is nearly impossible to advise you what to do. Can you take some photos?

If you are unfamiliar with electricity, I advise you to take it to some friend who does this sort of stuff. Bad things happen with electricity and improper wiring.

Here is the pics I took of the motor/blower...

Not a good angle on the wires but you can see that there are two red ones back there. I originally wanted to make a grinder out of this motor, but some guys on this forum told me that 1/8 HP wasn't enough power for that. but they did tell me that since the motor was connected as a blower I could use it with a forge, which was good news.

It was meant to be a blower for a oil burning furnace.

Well I hope That helps you help me, haha

I am in Dublin, Va and I am soon to be 30.

Tanks again, JFriday

Need a close up of the nameplate or at least tell us the voltage, likely it's a simple 120V Universal motor. Runs on AC or DC connect one lead to one leg of a 120VAC line and the other to the other leg.

But messing with 120VAC is enough to kill you and/or start a fire, so I recommend against it. Find someone that knows what they are doing.

There should be a wiring diagram on the nameplate or inside the cover for the wiring box.

The nameplate MUST (by code) tell the voltage. It could very easily be EITHER 110 or 220 VAC motor...especially if it came from a home central A/C and heating system. If you can't find an actual wiring diagram and/or a manual online, do not just wire it up and plug it in. It's a good way to smoke things or worse...

Its 115 volts, not sure if its ac or dc

Thank you all for all the good info! I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out.

If you can open it up just to snap a pic of the internals it would be helpful.

I imagine it is either a 115VAC induction motor (highly common for blower motors) or a Universal motor. If it is an induction motor it will have an armature that is called a squirrel cage and have not brushes, just a field windings. A lot of induction motors are capacitor start, but not usually in smaller motors.

If it is a Universal AC/DC motor it will have a wound armature brushes and field windings.

That photo is of the burner igniter plate. We want a photo of the black and white, "Westinghouse" label on the motor.

That plate is on the igniter, and may or may not reflect the combined power consumption of the system. The 12 amp current rating shown is a lot considering that the 1/8HP motor ( if that is right) should only draw 4 amps max. The ignition circuit and fuel pump would be consuming the rest? The motor shown looks large for 1/8HP.

If you are interested in selling that burner/igniter assembly, email me.
