LET IT BE

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be. Yeah
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

As with most of their later songs, I don't completely get it. Does "let it be" mean "let it GO", or "let it BE SO", or a combination?

I always thought it meant..."let life happpen, don't dwell on injuries or short-comings."

But I'd never investigated the song until your question. Oddly enough, there are a few Beatles' web sites. Here's an interpretation from one. But really, who knows?

"Specifically, McCartney has said the song honors his own mother, but his roots and natural emotions underpin his compositions just as they shape all of us. If a Catholic, a Buddhist, or even a nonbeliever finds meaning, solace, and comfort in their own interpretation of the lyrics, what does it matter?

For every work of art, their are two interpretations-the explicit one intended by the artist, and the one that forms in the eye, ear, or soul of the receiver. Let it be. "

You know, Kismet, when I first saw your post, I read the "interpretation" and thought "Cool". Then, I read it again and thought "WTF!". It doesn't SAY anything. Almost like it was written by a lawyer or psychologist. (my own prejudices showing)

Paul had to be rescued from the banal many times by Lennon. Every once in awhile, all on his own, he'd say something right. I think Lennon needed Paul to rescue him from the stupid.

They got better? No correlation. They might have been less than they could have been. They also got older.

I can note the change. They go from "Love me Do" to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Don't remember any sitars in Love Me Do.

I am no expert on the Beatles. They were B4 my time, I just listen to them a bunch.

My perception only.

Ferrous, I just lost my post!

In brief, the Beatles did massive amounts of speed and booze years before they ever tried pot and LSD. Lennon said he'd done acid well over a thousand times. But to argue drug inspiration, you would forget the cultural and social factors, which the Beatles were a part of. They made the times which changed them.

They did not go from, "Love Me Do" to, "Lucy in the Sky", but instead two pivotal albums, Revolver and Rubber Soul, made the transition.
Those two are considered amongst the greatest, not only by the Beatles, but in all of Rock N Roll.

Ferrous, there was a change in sound, but the Beatles stayed vibrant because they ALWAYS moved ahead. In the early days, they did massive amounts of speed and alcohol, later, as the society was changing, they were forerunners of that change with pot and LSD. Lennon said he'd taken acid well over a thousand times.

I once read a cogent article in Stereo Review which promoted the idea that most of their best music happened before LSD. I didn't agree with it, but it was well written.

It is smart to note they aged, their sound changed, and like all before or after, they left their moment in time.

The Beatles will always remain important, and in my personal view, the greatest Rock n Roll band of all time.

Also, I loved them quite a lot.

well, sheesh, I was born in 56, whatdya expect??

They did not go from "love me do" to "Lucy in the Sky". Rubber Soul and Revolver are still amongst the most pivotal albums ever recorded.

During the 60's we had the hippies fighting for peace.
During the 80's we the yuppies fighting for money.
What do we have now? Yippies fighting for peaceful money?

In the 50's you knew what was going on with everyone from listening in on the telephone party line. Today, you get to find a forum like this one and have friends the world over. One plus for today.

In the 50's every boy and his dog wanted a deer rifle ( usually a lever action ) and was lovingly taught a code of ethics on respect for all life by his pop or his uncle. Today, those boys are in their 60's and 70's and may have given up their hunting rifles, but they keep shotguns and
AK47's loaded against feral humans. One minus for today.

Finally in the 50's, if you were willing to make the effort, you could fight city hall and win. Today, the Federal Government has it's nose into everything, and in elections it doesn't matter who you vote for. Both parties have been bought and paid for. We used to be aghast at the corruption in other governments. Today we see the same things happening in our government and documented, but nobody listens.

How'd I get this maudlin? Oh, the semiannual fracas on this forum the other day. I come here to get away from that stuff in a place folks treat others with respect and kindness.

Didn't start out to cry in my beer. And I don't know how it turned into this rant. Pay no more attention than it's worth.

At least we can get things out rather then hold them in and feel alone. Its cool we all see times changing and nothing getting better.
