*wish* BK2 - Stainless Steel?

Stainless is not all that great! I mean why?...because it needs less maintenance. So what! I have had no problems what so ever with 1095 or any other carbon steel for that matter. That is all.

Ok, I put the *wish* part here as to not mislead anyone.

I know the Stainless 7 was a limited run.

Any chance on a stainless Bk2 offering?

Long shot with all of the other goodies coming out but I think this would be an awesome addition to the line.

Thoughts?

A BK2 in 420HC Stainless heat treated by Buck Knives (by Paul Bos) would be interesting.:D

Why not 440c? IMO 420hc is more for skinning, due to the fact that it's easy to get it razor sharp, but it lacks toughness no matter who heat treated it. It's just not that Kind of knife!

I was thinking, because heat treating is huge and the retired Paul Bos of Buck Knives is World famous for being the best at 420HC heat treating. The bottom line is all steels have pro's and con's.

IMHO, Beckers ROCK, BECAUSE of the steel they use. Tough as hell, easy to sharpen & offered at a good price point. Thats the appeal for most of us. Not paying for frills you will most likely never need. How many of us have really & i mean REALLY, ever had a knife that would not perform anymore because of rust ? I haven't, nor have i ever known anyone who has. What is the big deal about stainless ? I just don't get it. But my mind works differently than most, or so i've been told. With todays lubricants, rust on a carbon steel blade is a non-issue. During hunting season this year, my 7 or 9 went with me everyday. It got soaked, was used hard & put away wet. It had zero maintainence until the end of hunting season. It also had zero rust.

What am i missing here ?

A BK2 in stainless wouldn't (IMO) be worth the cost because it has no real added benefit to the current 1095CV, which is perfect by all measures for what the BK2 is meant and abused for.

IDK about a pure stainless, but a

BK-2 in D-2 Tool Steel
With Micarta Scales
With the Tweener Coating and
Same type of Tweener Sheath (Actually Might not need a sheath, I know I'd be getting a Custom Leather Sheath for it)
For around what 150-200 Dollars
That would be a beast of a knife.

Makes me smile just thinking about it :D

I have been really getting into stainless steel as of late. It SO nice to be able to use your knife and sheath it wet and not have to worry about rust. I think Im just getting spoiled with steel like INFI that is super tough AND stainless.

But a BK-2 In ELMAX would be a total dream blade. It would probably be about $200 but the performance would be ridiculous and it would be stainless + tough enough at .25 thick that you would probably have to do something really, really stupid to break it.

Speaking of BK2's I need to buy one for a permanent car knife.

1095 is king. I own many high end folders with S30V/S35VN. In the kitchen I use, on a daily basis, a 1095 custom Landi. It really is the ultimate in hard use, easy to sharpen, day in and day out steel.

I used my BK9 & BK7 exclusively during this past hunting season. Seriously, i had one or the other on, every day that i went out. It mostly rained all season this year. I sat in the rain with them. I did ZERO maintenance to them until well after the season was over. And my "maintenance" was taking it out & shaking the water off of it & the sheath. Thats it, nothing else. No rust at all. I mean, i don't understand what the big deal is either. I used some 3-in-one oil on them before hunting season started. I still have not "done anything" else to them.

For those of us that live a stones throw away from the Saltchuck, stainless would come in handy, especially because I don't let many of my knives keep their little black dresses on. I wouldn't want a stainless BK2, maybe a BK77, but what I'd really like to see is a tweener/short in stainless. I have had rust form quickly on my BK7 after a day of steelheading in a good westcoast downpour, nothing an emery cloth and a wipe down in olive oil couldn't fix, but for living in a rainforest, a small stainless knife that I don't have to worry about at all would earn a place in my kit, if only for food prep.

Hmm, I'd pick up a stainless 14 maybe for beachside food prep or something.
