I have got a good connection to a HT place that does cryo. So that won't be a factor. I'm planing to make small 2" blade scandi grinds with about a 18-20 degree edge.

Some thing like this.

The reason why I go for Uddeholm is because I have had good experience whit their products and I think have have found a way to buy their products.

S690, Elmax, Vanadis 4E, would all be good choices. If you can find Vanadis 4 thinner than .5" please let me know!

It seems like I could get my hands on 2,5mm Elmax fore sure. :) That is so awesome. I'm going to look into M390. It might be a Bohler and there for harder to get for me.

M390 has even more Vanadium than Elmax and is more wear resistant. I've made a few kitchen blades from it and it's excellent for that. I'd probably choose Elmax for a general purpose blade but M390 makes a great small knife, folder or kitchen slicer. You can run M390 up to 61 with cryo with no edge chipping problems.

Elmax or M390; I don't believe you could go wrong with either.

i can't find much on M390 in relation to toughness, and it doesn't show up on those graphs as often... how does it compare with Elmax or CPM s35VN for toughness/strength? i have a severe interest in the M390, but am trying to research this myself.

thanks

I'm interested in this too. I do like Elmax an awful lot. I feel it's a significant step up from CPM-154, and that's saying something - CPM-154 is really good stuff.

Elmax is the toughest stainless blade steel. At HRC 59 is is 50% tougher than S30V at HRC 57. At HRC 61 it is st ill tougher than S30V at HRC 57. I consider Elmax to be the 3V of stainless steel.

M390 has about the same toughness as S30V. M390 beats both Elmax and S30V in edge holding. A good comparison for M390 edge holding is S90V. However, it is easier to finish and sharpen than S90V. We have a Phil Wilson knife made with M390 hardened to HRC 63. The edge is super thin. This knife cuts better than any stainless steel knife I've ever used. It has amazing edge holding and is easy to resharpen.

I want to be clear than I an not bashing S30V. It is an excellent steel. It is very tough and has great edge holding. It far surpasses S35VN and CPM154 in our testing. Its downside is finishing and sharpening.

100% agree with Chuck. Bottom line is you need to try these BU steels. 3V and 110V are the only Crucible products I really use anymore. If Vanadis 4E was more available I'd quit on 3V too!

thanks Chuck... I was wondering about this. I have asked about the "toughest" stainless in different ways probably 5 times since i've been on this forum as most of my knives are military style utility blades and have never gotten a proper response.

much appreciated

Peppen, I would be interested in getting some Elmax or 390 if its possible. Strangely enough, I havent been able to find a source in Sweden and buying a swedish steel overseas, seems a little backwards to me
You can PM me if you want to share, if not I completely understand.

FYI, usa knifemaker supply has em both... i've looked into it as well, and i'm super interested in the elmax for my combat knives as well as M390 for my hunters.

I will keep you posted.

@Rustyrazor: Thanks, but I actually knew that. Alpha carries some too. I deal quite a bit with USAknifemaker, but like I said; Shipping swedish steel back and forth over the atlantic ocean by air, is a little too pricey for me. But hey if I cant get it anywhere else:D

@Peppen:  Thanks. Btw, where in Sweden are you located? I´m in Katrineholm.
