With all the talk of PSK's, lets see everyones up to date psk pics!

Darn it...I knew there was something I was meaning to do this evening. I'll take some fresh pics tomorrow.

Something you might all want to add is one or two of these large heat packs. Doesn't take up much room in your bags. These will keep your core temperature up a bit in cold climates. I wear them in the winter to stay warm when hiking and at work and keep my back loose. They will stay very warm for up to 8 hours then taper off after that but are still pretty warm after 12-14 hour days at work in winter. These wrap around your lower back with the heat source at the lumbar area. Of course you could wear it higher or cut the part that wraps around and use it on a shoulder or your neck. With winter clothes on, it really helps warm your torso up as the extra clothing traps the heat. They warm up very hot after 1/2 hour. Could thaw frozen hydration lines, warm liquids, etc. Very nice when sleeping on a winter camping trip.

Porqupine, I've been looking for a good company to buy those from. I've had a few in my day, and tested them all and got mixed results, more of the time though they didnt work, so my respect for them has gone down a fair amount.

Seaside train tunnel survival kit of mine so far -
- LED headlamp
- a pair of pliers
- medium sized fixed blade
- towel of 2ft long
- 5mm sling of 20ft.
- 2 wire gate carabinars
- radio

We have them at walmart here. You get three in a box for $5.50.
I've used many of the generic or off brand ones and they are not worth the money saved.
Wear this brand for a day in winter and you'll see why i say this.

Here's my PSK.

The pack is from Mountain Equipment Co-op. The main compartment holds a Pelican case, which contains the majority of my kit.

The Pelican case contains

  • several garbage bags
  • space blanket
  • SUN twist LED flashlight
  • small roll of red duct tape
  • Fox 40 whistle
  • match case with a mix of strike-anywhere and wind / waterproof matches
  • SAK
  • mag block with ferro rod, plus JK tin knife Nessie striker
  • hand sanitizer
  • container of PJCBs
  • a few tightly-folded pieces of newsprint
  • mini-bic

The side compartment contains my first aid kit, as well as a Becker Necker. The front stuff pouch contains a toque and a bundle of jute twine (not shown). The top zip pouch holds my compass.

There are plenty of revisions coming. The flashlight will be replaced with something more compact and powerful, and I have a few items to add based on feedback received in my PSK thread.

Nice to hear about others' kits!

All the best,

- Mike

Guys, one thing I've noticed is that only one person has included cash in their PSK. Is it just assumed you'd have some cash in your pockets?

I've got a $20 in mine, in a little baggie. Have been thinking about breaking into smaller bills, but the single $20 takes up negligible space.

Back when I used to carry my PSK in a guyot on my belt:

I'll try to get pics of the contents of my current psk set-up sometime this weekend.

Good call. Speaking personally, I assumed that I would be able to barter with PJCBs :D , but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to throw a few dollars in there.

Thats another great tip. Cash can be good in all kinds of situations, from running out of gas to bartering with another party for food etc....Its also the EDC item I have the least discipline. If you only knew how many times I grabbed the twenty in my Tilley flap to procure essentials like ice cream cones and greasy fries at the chip stand or another round of beer.........Cold hard cash is much more difficult for me to keep then lets say a firesteel :D

I know! I always keep a reserve $40 folded up and tucked in a flap in my wallet for emergencies...it always gets used somehow, and not for emergencies :o:D.

Good catch BWSkipper

Money is a good idea.

It isn't as much fun to think about, I'm more likely to be in dire need of 20 bucks than to need 3 different ways of starting a fire. :grumpy:

maybe you should put in some plastic!

great pics guys!! ive been reminded i ran out of hand sani and need a 2nd whistle and some tape actually a bunch of stuff...its always something!

and thanks rock6 for that fishing kit site, great stuff there!

A couple of years ago at work, I dropped my wallet. When I got the wallet back, the first thing I checked was the "lucky" $50, and $100 bill I kept stashed in a small pocket. Both were gone, so I figured out a new way to stash cash. I like to wrap duct tape around a used ATM card, so I folded a bill in quarters, wrapped the bill in thin plastic from a sandwich bag, and wrapped the bill and card together with duct tape. Hopefully, if I lose track of my wallet again for five minutes, it will be a bit less obvious where the cashola is...And now I only keep a max of $20 in any given hidey-hole, and I have more places where I keep money hidden. I hope this helps someone else from losing their wallet-PSK loot like happened to me. Lessons learned.

I made a new setup, more in line with the PSK title. It's compact, and even fairly light.

Yes, you can wear this comfortably with the knife there.
You can run a belt through behind the area with the molle webbing.

I just got this vest/hydration pack and moved my stuff out of my Max Devil Dog into it. I haven't used it yet, but it shows the PSK gear that I normally carry:
