With or without a sheath in your pocket?

What's the general thought on putting a folding knife in your pocket with or without a sheath/slip? I put my knife in a front pocket on it's own away from coins etc but it does gather fluff etc if it's been oiled slightly. It's also nice to be able to feel the knife when you put your hand in your pocket.

If I had used a pocket sheath/slip...I would NOT have lost a favorite traditional knife that I used for work. Several blades were custom ground to fit certain adjustment screws.
But a sheath is too slow, in my opinion. So I use pocket clips only and am happy and my knife is secure.

I would wear it in a belt pouch, if I didn't want to mess it up. In fact I have pocket clipped knives and belt pouch knives. Depending on what they are and how I use them.

Yes the belt pouch is best.
I lost a favorite Western small three blade stockman carrying it loose in a pocket. I got out of my very low to the ground car (MG) and it must have fallen out onto the parking lot when I got out.
Went back minutes later but somebody had snagged it by then.
Fantastic little knife , plain carbon steel blades
:( :( :(
I'm not sure a slip would have prevented this. Maybe. Some one has very wisely suggested I put my hankie in on top of the knife. I have had other stuff in my shirt pocket launch when I pulled the hankie out of there so it is possible I could loose a knife pulling a hankie to use it. I now fold it and carry it back pocket with wallet etc. A hankie that is not used for other than pocket stuffing should work though.

I'm totally a pocket clip using sort but just the other day the strap on my bike bag some how yanked my Spyderco UK PK out of my pocket as I was getting bike with bags out the door. Never had that happen before.
Clip on knife pouches, my favorite, have even launched off my pants/belt.
I suppose the best answer is a pouch with a loop (or a surgically implanted hatch in my forehead
). I always wondered what I should use that space for. Now I know.

I have been known to carry my pocket clipped knives in belt pouches. Especially the thicker ones and those are the ones I like to use the most.

Boker makes some nice pocket pouches (the brown one with the textured surface here) and Swiss Army (the black one with the flap).
ignore the paracord loop and the metal key ring clip above it; those are my additions. Long story.

Long story =

Folders are pocket clipped. Always, unless a toolbelt is worn. Then it goes into an available pouch slot.

I'm not concerned with speed, but even I've found pocket slips to be a bit too slow. I'd really rather have the knife on my belt.
I don't worry much about scratching, but even if I did I don't keep anything besides other knives in the same pocket.

No digging around in your pocket for the knife. Just pull up on the strap and the pouch comes out of your pocket. Use your knife leaving the pouch dangling. All done, drop the knife back in the pouch and back into the pocket.

Never used a pocket clip or belt pouch for a folder before. I always carried a full size trapper upright along side my wallet in my hip pocket for years. Well, I bought a new wallet and it's bigger than the old one. Now there's no room for the knife. No clip on the knife so it's down to a pocket slip or belt pouch for me. I like the looks of the open top holster type sheath. Does it hold the knife securely?

I like that idea. I have my phone in my left pocket and change in my right, along with my knife. A pouch would keep them all separate. Very nice.

I usually have a traditional in my right front in a slip.
Horsewright Horsewright - how do I get one of these! I love the nice leather strap, way better than a loose slip in my pocket.

My nicer slipjoint ride in a pocket slip, but the SAKs, beer scouts, etc. are either just free in the pocket or hanging on a suspension clip.

Most of my traditionals fit in my watch pocket, even the big ones like my kabar large coppersmith. If my pants don't have a watch pocket I'll usually stuff a handkerchief in the pocket and carry one of the knives with a lanyard to help keep it upright.

Or I may simply choose a modern knife with a pocket clip that day. The only sheath that currently ever rides in my pocket is for the brkt adventurer.

I carry my Sebbie 21 in a slip case, after I lost a screw soon after getting it. I did Loctite all the screws thereafter, haven't had any problems. However, it makes it less obtrusive in a pocket, and keeps it from accumulating lint etc. With a short toggle (cord) it slips right out.

the only knives I carry sheathed in the pocket are fixed blades, usually the CS Desperado, CRKT Minimalist or Spyderco ARK
