I'm sad to see the Sage 3 getting disco'd but im wondering, will this lead to the rest of the series being dropped in the future or will we continue see a Sage 5 and so on? I love the idea of the series all using the same blade and a similar handle shape but in different materials and locks...

Are there any clues what lock the sage 5 will feature or its handle? I'd love to see a compression lock sage.

It's been mentioned elsewhere that a Sage 5 is in the works, but I don't know what the ETA is for it or what lock type it will be. Sal has stated though that the compression lock will not be featured in the Sage series since it's a Spyderco invention and the intention of the series is to pay homage to other innovators in the knife world.

To clarify the status of the Sage 3, it is being discontinued in its current form with a blue G-10 handle. However, it is being replaced by the same knife made with black cubic check carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scales--the same material that will be used on the black-bladed Szabo. As such, if you're a fan of the Bolt Action Lock (I am), life is still very good.

Stay safe,

Mike

That's great! I'm indifferent when it comes to blue G-10, but I did like the Bolt Action Lock.

Hmmm, I somehow missed that info. Thanks for sharing it. I'd always hoped that the bolt action lock would be on a CF version and here comes my wish. HOWEVER, I sold my Sage 3 not because of the blue G-10, but because that thing was WIDE at least wider than my Sage 1 and it just didn't sit well with me. I guess it had to be wider because of the bolt action lock? Here's hoping the replacement is slimmer and I might have a winner.

Hmm, I may have to pick up the new one. I wasn't super impressed by the bolt lock. It was difficult to disengage with one hand and the blade had a weak closing bias or "detent."

That's the best news I could hope for! Thank you.

As you can see from my sig line I'm planning a project moddifying a sage 3 and the plan is/was a carbon fiber handle, now that a S3 is going to be avaliable in CF I may have to change my mind and go with some other material (and pick the new one up as well!).

Rats!!!
I was hoping for a compression lock

I guess that I will just have to pick another Para2

Thats awesome news! thanks for sharing this

do you guys think the CF in the Sage 1 and the Sage 3 will feel much different in hand, or just aesthetic?

Are you asking about the knives as a whole or just the material?
All speculation but with the knives coming from the same factory I'm guessing they'll use exactly the same material. I also agree with Jnewell however that the handle shapes are quite different and even tho the texture may be the same the differet profiles will make the handles feel quite different in hand.

I was referring more about the handle material. As I prefer the lock in the Sage 1 anyways, was just wondering.

In the Spyderco forums Kristi stated:

It is still a Sage3. It's model # is C123CFBA and it's SKU is C123CFBAP.

Not quite, instead of the twill carbon fiber/G-10 laminate it will have cubic check carbon fiber/G-10 laminate (just like what is used for the C146CFBBKP - the latest Szabo Folder)

Bringing this post back up because of today's spyderbite, apparently Sal must of been throwing us off because a comp lock sage is now officially in the works! Also a BBL/CBBL sage. The CF S3 is beautiful too, combine the best features from my two favories.

Big thanks to spyderco for listning to what we want! Other manufactures take note.

Thanks for posting. I'm also a big fan of Spyderco's Sage Series with its overall theme, homage, variety and direction. I have all four in the current series and looking forward to the upcoming Sage 3 with the black cubic check carbon fiber/G-10 laminate handle.

Here's what the Spyderco December byte said verbatim:

What does the future hold for the Sage Series? Well, in addition to continuing to recognize the contributions of other designers, based on popular demand we plan to showcase our own lock innovations, including our patented Compression Lock and Ball Bearing Lock. These locks have definitely stood the test of time and earned their rightful place alongside the other notable mechanisms in the series.

First off, anyone else wish the byte was weekly instead of monthly? :)

Second, I think Sal has one of the lowest egos in the industry, and just needed to be convinced that he has created some of the best locks in human history, hence allowing for entry into the Sage series! This is great news, very psyched.

Ever think of going for the Paul lock? One of the few, if not the only lock that locks open and closed.

I think the Paul would be a good idea, but I think that Benchmade has rights to the lock since they purchased Lone Wolf.
