Longbow, let me do some research on that for you. As far as I recollect they were all AUS 8 until they changed them on the next generation that was made in Taiwan with 440A. I had one of those as well and the earlier models were MUCH more quality IMO. Im not sure what the current models are made from. This is a much older model than the one that is selling now. Think I got it back in 02 or 03
Ill check it out and get back to you. I wanna make sure my info is correct. Theres no markings on the knife of course, that would make it too easy.

LOL Im trying to read up o the recon 1 I was only aware of the made in Japan ones being made in AUS-8. I bought the VERY next generation back when they were advertized as 440a, and the quality took a big dive.

Looking up old reviews of the Recon 1 It seems it was indeed AUS 8. I stand by my assesment. Realize that I am working from 30 min research and memory here and I aquired this knife around 10 years ago. I Bought it because I was dissatisfied with the newer 440a model and wanted a replacement of the previous generation that I had given to my Brother.
