What is the steel?

It is called Sleipner and is made by Uddeholm in Sweden. It is a popular hard use blade steel used by companies like LionSTEEL in Italy, and is considered to be a more durable alternative to D2.

I like it better than D2 or S30V for hard use woods applications. It has about the same rust resistance as D2. Much easier to sharpen quick to a razor edge than D2 or the higher chrome steels. Often times just some stropping after some hard wood cutting will make it shaving sharp again. This particular knife has a rockwell hardness around 60.
