Wives Friends and Knife Collecting...

Like a lot of things, knives mean more to some than others. I have pulled out a $400 folder at outdoor events and used it it front of people and no one says a word, other times, someone will make a comment about a great looking knife. My son understands knives and has the bug as well. My wife just shakes her head and says "another knife". I guess it could be worse, I could be chasing blondes or Corvettes instead of Kershaws and Spyderco's.

I think I fall into the middle like most others here. My friends, family, and girlfriend don't *dislike* (well, at least openly) my knife passion, and in fact they sometimes can actually see the quality in one of my knives :p. However, none of them really *get* it :o

Well at least my father used to be a carpenter and can appreciate a high quality cutting tool and he enjoys the Buck folder i got for him :)

My wife scared the girls at work when one of them asked for a knife to open a package and she whipped out some folding sykes fairborne knife she swiped from me years ago.

I live in a rural enough area that generally people think most "PC" knives, like jackknives and folders with wooden handles, are cool. They get a little hinky about large fixed blades (Whatya need THAT for?)

My wife usually rolls her eyes when I get a new knife in the mail and says " you really needed another knife !" The cool thing is she loves knives too and I know she is only jealous when she makes those kind of remarks to me. She loves it when I buy her a new one though. I recently bought her a new Vic pink alox classic after the plastic handles busted on her old classic. She loved the new one!,,,VWB.

My wife does not care if I drop $800 on a knife, but she does care about the computer time..

I don't talk much about my knives except with a few family members. I've received a few strange looks and I'd rather avoid it. My grandfather has a nice collection of knives and guns and welcomes checking out a new knife, although I've had to show him how to close them more than once. My wife doesn't mind my collection, just as long as our little critter can't find them and take his first trip to the ER.

After 40 years, the wife long ago gave up on me and my knife habit. She likes some of them and always carries one herself. None of my friends are really into knive. My oldest son is but he is in to kitchen knives.

Well Im just 15 and my mom is okay with my knife thing but she still always goes "what do you need another knife for?" or "you want to spend $XXXX on a knife!?". My dad always gives me crap about it and tries to put me down/embarrass me with them which is why I stopped telling him whenever I get a new knife (my mom uses her credit card). Whenever he does notice another knife, I have to lie about the price or he would blow a gasket. The funny thing is that he used to like knives when he was younger, I picked it up from him. He had a bunch of puma's, buck, schrade and gerbers but everytime I bring that up he makes up all these dumb excuses as to why he needed them but I don't. None of my friends have or care about quality knives but they respect and even kinda admire my hobby. They do bug me about spending so much money on it sometimes but just in good natured fun.

"Creepy" is a word I hear a lot.

ditto, my friends wives, GF etc all think that anyone that owns a knife is a psycho killer waiting to happen. When they find out that i own a large collection they no longer want to hang out. I get shunned from a lot of gatherings.

The worst incident was after a dinner gathering where my GF at the time mentioned to the group that i collected knives, they all wanted to see them. They seemed fine with it at the time, but the next day i had a visit from the Police, a complaint had been lodged by one of the guests GF's. When i explained to the officer that i was a known blade collector and educator of knife skills (bushcraft) in the wilderness community, he relaxed a bit. I dragged out the Pelican Case (large rifle case), which was double padlocked and chained to the structure timbers and opened it up and showed him the collection. I explained that all the blades were legal to own, i showed each knife, its steel, name etc. He left and the complaint was dropped and never recorded.

He did tell me that the complainant described me as "he's like a psycho or something, he collects all these Rambo knives , he's like one of those hidden killer neighbors you always hear about."

her BF was so pissed with her, i'm still friends with him, i dont even talk to her or look at her anymore.

My wife totally hates it, threatened divorce and all that. Basically it's a money issue and in my culture (I'm not in the US and I'm chinese to make it pretty darn worse...) blades are frowned upon.

My friends do not see why I bother and my family will kill me if they find out (since they are illegal to add jetfuel to my raging fire).

So with ninja-like skill and with the help of my sis's (she is fine as long as I pay her with free burgers) paypal I have and will continue my quest to fulfill my bottomless desire for all things sharp and well made! I keep all my toys in my office room and I pray everyday that the cops don't come a knocking on my door...

my mother always wondered why I liked knives but I convinced her when I bought her a ceramic kitchen knife and told her if she honestly didnt like the knife I would stop buying them.

still waiting for her to get back to me on that one.

the last girlfriend gave me knives as presents.
