Looking for input from guys with experience at one or more of these schools. I'm a newbie who wants to learn by doing (best way for me!). I live in Minnesota and have many places within easy driving to practice skills, but really want a good solid base to build upon. I have a buddy who has taken 7 or 8 Tracker courses, but I'm not into the spiritualism aspect and he loves that part. I'm not opposed to spending $ on a good school, just looking for info beyond what I'm reading on the websites for these places.

I have many books, knives, lots of gear. Heck, it seems I am spending more on new stuff every week (darn it, I keep hanging out here, always dangerous for the wallet :)).

Any advice appreciated.

Steve,

I teach at the Wilderness Learning Center. I'll be more than happy to show you the ropes if you decide to take a course with us. I've taken courses at a few schools in New England but I really learned the most at the WLC. There are some good schools out there and you just need to find the one that works for you and fits your budget, schedule and interests.

Feel free to E-mail me or ask any questions here.

Where in MN are you? I might be able to help.

Sound like I might have to plan a trip out there Kev! Do you have any family classes so I might include my 2 teenage sons also?

Rockywolf,

The two weekend rendezvous campouts (WAR and PEACE) in the fall and spring are family oriented. You would be amazed how many skills you can pick up over a weekend and all are welcome. I can't speak on behalf of Marty but the usual minimum age is 18 for the courses. Maybe if you are there with them he might make an exception. Feel free to E-mail him or call him at the school.

I don't mind a parent with young children. I just want you to be sure that you are aware that if they are too young and you don't get your moneys worth. I have had boys here with their father as young as 12 and some did real well and others not so well. You know your boys so the decision is yours. I do have family rates and all our courses are family friendly.

thanks Marty. the younger is 13 (by spring will be 14), the older will be 16. I will be doing some teaching/practicing over the winter. Spring or fall next year are going to happen! Now it's a matter or figuring out the $, time off, and how to get there. Does your web site have a gear to bring list?

Steve

I'm in stillwater. Maybe you want a primer before you go out east?

Rockywolf,
I send out all the info when I get the applications. If you want an early heads up to start getting equipment I can send you a list. However you don't need a lot for the basic course. We provide most everything.

Is that list something you could provide here? I'd just be curious to see it!

I've been contacted about basic gear for a winter trip. This is a good list minus the coldweather bag, insulated or closed foam pad and tarp.
