So I went for a little trip to the woods again today. here are some pics and a few questions for the plant guys tracker guys and those that know about fatwood. That recent excellant thread on fatwood got my wheels spinning and some feed back would be cool. I think I got the right stuff, but, am I suppossed to use the portions from a stump or just what I found? It certainly burns!:)

When you split a piece off what did the inside look like? If it is a reddish orange, smelled rich of pine and is very dense and heavy, then that's the stuff. I have never seen an entire tree like that though, just stumps. That tree looks a lot like an old cedar, cedar weathers like that and is slow to rot. The way I find fatwood is look for old weathered stumps then go give them a kick, if they are solid as a rock split some off and take a look at it. Chris

EDIT: just looked at your other pics, sorry but that does not look like fatwood, I don't think it is cedar either. BTW where in GA are you.

North Georgia. That was on the mcgraw ford WMA. Near ballground Georgia.

Guess that was fatwood, didn't look like it in the first pics and I have never seen a whole tree, just stumps, good find.

Been through that area quite a bit, used to go to dirt track racing in wood stock and blue ridge. Chris

Thanks for the help;) Blue Ridge is a beautiful place. You ever get up into the Jacks river area? One of my favorite places I think.

Looking at the second pictures with it on fire I would say you found it, for sure, I just never found a whole tree. Now you have me wanting to go out and look for whole trees. :D Chris

Not that I recall, but it has been 20 years or more since I spent much time there. Chris

Nice pics. I'd harvest as much of that stuff as I could! Great stuff, enough to last for many years.

Yep, that's definitely a feeder shed. I'll bet a bunch of bacon-bellied critters ate at those bunks many years ago.

I love Jacks River. That's the first place I went backpacking as an adult, and my wife and I have been there many times since. Beautiful area, and the trails are a lot of fun, especially the one with the river crossings during the summer. It sucks hard doing that trail with a 40 lb pack on though. I don't advise that. :)

And yeah, that is definitely fatwood. Good find!
