Hello!

I built a buffer today for my felt wheel that I bought for sharpening my blades.

The wheel is 12''x2''with a 3/4'' arbor hole. It was used and the arbor hole isn't centered.

Can I turn the wheel straight and how should I do it? Will only a rasp do the job or will I need something with an edge?

The wheel was bought from a knife factory and was atleast twice as big when it was new.

if you have never used a buffer, go read this sticky. it could keep you from getting hurt. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=614065
never put a blade edge first into any buffing wheel. you can get a buffing wheel card to dress and clean your wheel. i would scrap the felt wheel idea and check out the paper wheels. here is a thread i started on them. these work great for sharpening and last a long time. i have a set thats over 17 years old and still going strong. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787
after the blade show you can get them from dave who has the waterjet forum. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=643625

You need to have a sturdy tool rest, otherwise you will just remove material fairly evenly from the whole circumference. When I trued up my wheels, I used 3 bricks because that was the exact height of the wheel centre.

Make sure it is actually the outside that is out of round and that the arbor hole is not oversized, if the arbor hole is too large, it will be out of round every time you put it on the machine. I have used a good quality silicone on the arbor holes of several cotton buffs to close up some gaps in the past.

Thanks!

I will look out for the paper wheels.

69_knives, you was right, the main reason was that the center hole was to soft and a bit to big, I fixed the problem and it now runs much smother, how ever I may try to turn it better.
