Wolf Attack Kills Teacher

Sad. Running around predators will get you killed.

Unfortunately due to the influence of some well backed environmental wacko's, who have unduly influenced policy in many states in the U.S. We are pretty well guaranteed to continue seeing many more such tragic tales in the years to come.

Man. If i lived up that way I'd have a herd of badass dogs. A few Great Pyrenees, a couple Komondors and a hand full of well bred Malamutes.
Just jogging with a couple Pyrs or Komondors and the wolves would have either stayed away or been killed rapidly.

Please explain how anyone other than this woman is responsible for this tragedy.

Sad story. I note the community have now upped their precautions for their children going to school. Seems a bit of a lax attitude. I do not mean to sound paranoid as this is probably a 1 in a 1,000,000 event but still that's always the time it gets you.

Under 5ft and athletic means small to me, deer like size some may say.

I live in a country where I do not have to worry about this sort of thing but should I move somewhere like this you can bet I'd be taking the correct precautions. Don't know the best defense against this type of predator but bear spray or a small handgun would be my first thoughts and neither add to your running load imo. I know they said she probably didn't know the wolves were on her until they attacked I wonder if she was running with earphones in?

This is a real tragedy.....Things always get sticky when every now again a wake up call happens and we as people.. (for all intensive purposes the most dominant species on earth) are reduced to being part of the food chain....It's humbling in a primal way.. and is an uncomfortable reminder of how we are part of an equation that we endlessly try to rise above..Fault here lies with no-one. THe wolves where doing what wolves do. THe woman was doing what she does.. I don;t know if either party considered the consequences of there actions...However logic would suggest in an area that houses mega predators you need to adjust your activity accordingly, but that is easy to say when reading it on print, and not being there.. The bottom line is that this is a real tragedy For the woman, for her family and for the pack which will likely be exterminated. Don;t get me wrong the pack now needs to be killed.. But there seems to be a villificaton of mega predators that occasionally feed on human prey. This is a ghastly thing... I;ve witnessed the effects of many Domestic animal attacks and they are bad enough. But humans in general are slower, weaker, and less agile than most game.. which would seem to put us in the running as a viable prey species in certain areas that can be obtained with minimal output. As survivalists if you where in a survival situation wouldn't you be looking for the same thing?
I'm not a peta guy, I'm not a bleeding heart, but I am an objective realist.
We although we try to prepare for things are vulnerable.. not just to animals but to any number of potential hazards.. Honestly all things considered I;m surprised we don;t see things like this happen more...We are used to being able to walk around with impunity where ever we go assuming that our sole right to do so lies in the fact that we triumphed over the landscape.. the eventuality of unfortunate conflicts are sure to happen...
well thants what I think fwiw ymmv

I always wonder how many of these simply go unreported. I get tired of hearing "there are no recorded wolf kills on humans since ..." Yeah, right.

I got nothing against wolves - but they are a predator. If I were running in a remote area of Alaska, I would be carring something substantial. Even if only for psychological benefit. ;)

wtf? The WOLVES, Because they ate her!!!
My question was "AnyONE other than the woman." It was directed at a person who seemed to be blaming various types of persons and/or organisations.

It's true, the wolves killed her. That's large predators for you. But are they responsible? Of course not. Next we want to hold lightning responsible for striking people.

"They're just doing what wolves do," Berner said. "Their nature happened to kill my daughter, but I don't have any anger towards wolves."

Even the father of the woman killed, realizes that the wolves did what animals do sometimes. They didn't commit a crime, they're animals. I of course would want to kill any walking, breathing, thing if I was in his shoes but I commend him on being sensible.

What would those organizations have us believe? That wolves don't eat meat?

I think the original poster is refering to the tendency of some animal lovers to suggest that predators are not inclined to attack humans, or aren't really dangerous. I think there is a strong tendency on the part of some people to try to view all wildlife as if they are pets. People with that mindset are shocked when they realize that animals are dangerous.

Years ago in South Africa, I was on a tour with other educators. At the end of the tour, we went to Kruger National Park. My fellow tour members seemed shocked that the tour guides carried guns! Another guy wanted to go jogging outside of the gates of our compound, and was surpised when the guard told him no because the lions would eat him!

Folks like this haven't a clue!

I think the environmentalists that do it right want to protect the species from stupidity of humans while understanding that they will do what they are prone to do, which is kill and eat meat.

I don't think this means we should crowd all land with suburbs or hunt them stupidly. But to blame all animals deaths on the NRA is to call all environmentalists and animal rights activists stupid.

Now then - back on track before this is locked unnecessarily.

RIP to the woman - blaming the death on her seems to kick her dead body.

Thanks for the link to the story, but I could have done without the stupid political commentary.

She was fairly new to the area. Probably not used to the dangers of wildlife. Could have been a bear, big cat, or pack of dogs. She was doing the same thing I see women do around her. Around here I see women running at night or early morning all alone. Earphones stuff into their ears in the zone. They are lulled into a false sense of security. There are wolves (dirt bags), dogs, and cars to pay attention to. This was an unfortunate incident. Nature will get you. You have to increase your awareness. If someone were to have told her to be more aware, carry a pistol and know how to use it she probably wouldn't have done it. Shouldn't have been alone either. Prayers for the famly. Wolves will be wolves. We are the top species because we have the ability to commmunicate ideas and use our brains. We don't have claws and fangs to defend ourselves. Chance favors the prepared.

I keep seeing the same victim profile for these kind of animal attacks.

Jogging
IPOD
Small women

A woman was killed on Canada's East Coast by coyotes not too long ago... you could have exchanged stories word for word.

It's nice to jog on the trail, listening to tunes...... but man, in predator country, you might as well slap an "eat me" sign on your back. It is tragic and my sympathies go out to her family... but the reality is this was TOTALLY AVOIDABLE with a little awareness. I hope she didn't die in vain and that this becomes a learning experience for folks.

You are so right. Well said.

I don't get the 'dirt bags' reference.

It's the same thing up here but not just with predators. I see yuppie mom types jogging with those big-wheeled strollers in the early morning on some roads that I don't feel totally safe walking on. I'm all for exercise but not on a winding backroad with hardly any shoulder, let alone sidewalk, and certainly not when the moose are in rut. Those moosies get all horny, wander about at sun-up looking to score and are known to charge people and cars. I don't know why these people think they could get themselves and/or their kids out of the way of a 1500 lb sex-and-death-machine.
That's not even considering the possibility of a bears. Does anyone know what happens when you and a bear are on one side of the road and her cubs or yearlings are on the other? Clue: It doesn't end in hugs and ice cream.
Also, the woods in my neighborhood are practically crawling with coyotes and they get pretty brazen. I've seen them cross in front of my car pretty nonchalantly.
It's really sad that this happened to that poor woman and I really feel bad for her family. I wish there was a better way to educate people about the dangers of walking/running alone on remote roads. Pavement does not equal safety and I think a lot of people think the opposite.

I think that by "dirtbags" he means human "wolves" that prey on people; rape, mugging, etc in his urban area.
