Women and knives

I'll drop in my $.02 here was well. My wife is pretty awesome with my knives. I kinda got the "look" when I started to make them, but now she's curious to see what I've done. I use her as a sounding board a lot - "What do you think of this?, etc" She's pretty good about giving me feedback on my knives and my sheaths. Now, on the flip side of this, is that she will occasionally ask me to make some leather thing for her or other little things and will ask to have it pretty quick, but then in return, I get some neat requests for stuff as well (including a few sales :D )

One thing she does not do, is cook. There are only two of us (kids are out of the house now) and I love cooking, and she is more than willing to let me do this :D One of the things she does is when she's gardening and needs to dig, she will grab just any knife out of the kitchen drawer, or what ever edged thing is close and go at it. She one day grabbed one of my Darrel Ralph TC4's (file worked, mosaic pins, bead blast taken off to satin, cocobolo handle) and dug in the garden with it. Credit to Darrel on HT - it lived. So....a week later she got her 01 hunter to do as she wished :D

When I get a new folder, she's pretty cool with it. Considering how many folders, fixed blades, and shop toys I have I think I'm pretty fortunate, though, somtimes, in the back of mind, I can't help thinking that she never will forgive me for dropping $500 US on that pool cue......(that was 3 years ago!!) And then, of course, there was that time when I was just learning to fly fish, and decided after a year that I deserved an Orvis to fish the Bow River. Comment I got was - You spent how much on the fly rod? $375!!! So...you spent $375 on a fly that probably catches nothing. Doesn't your $50 one catch nothing just as well!! Reality can be really ugly that way sometimes :D

My girlfriend has always been pretty cool about me and my knives. Even when we first starting dating she didn't seemed suprised or turned off by any of them....most being balis. A year in and after handling a Kershaw Avalanche I had bought, she insisted on me buying her one too. She has also bought me a few...and she has good taste and knows quality when she sees/feels it... these include a BM-47, Typhoon bali kit, and a William Henry. We live together now and it is kind of funny around family. It used to be "J, let me use your knife", "who has a knife...you know Jason does, let me use it." Now its "Brenda...can I use your knife?" and " who has a knife...oh yeah Jason and Brenda."
She isn't shy around firearms either. She is a damn fine shot with a 9mm!! (I hate to admit, but maybe even better than me! )
I wouldn't call her a knife nut, but she definately knows her stuff (brands, makers, models, etc.) You want to see her go crazy...ask about Nighmare before Christmas and Jack Skellington...there is her passion. So we have a house full of knives and Tim Burton collectables.
Overall she is an awesome girl...and on top of that she is smokin' hot!!

Hello folks,
RWS’ wife, Karie, here:
...
I have a number of knives, as my husband pointed out, and each one of them has a special use or purpose for me. I do have a few that are just for show but isn’t that in it’s self a purpose? I won’t go into detail about which ones I use for what and why I like them because that would take too much time and probably bore the poor readers (most men don’t have a very long attention span) :D

Details about which knives you use and why you like them are why most of us read this forum. The attention span here may be short, but I think it would hold at least a few of us. :) If you have time, of course.

My wife takes my knives. I don't know they are missing until I'm looking for one. I can find any combination of the following in her purse/car/daypack:

Gerber Applegate folder, Spyderco Rescue, Spyderco Ladybug, Gryphon M10, Benchmade AFK, Benchmade AFCK, and a tiny Cold Steel San Mai III tanto folder about 2" long.

I've been looking for a knife for her-just not sure what. I was thinking about a Hideaway.

Don’t hide them in the back of the closet for her to find and sell at a garage sale for $4.50 when you’re out of town or long-gone.

That's awesome, I'm going to start checking out garage sales for cheap good quality knives!

My wife isn't shy about knives by any streach...In fact I have a few she really likes :D Interestingly enough though she refuses to carry one  and the sound of a blade on a stone has the same effect as fingernails on a chalk board for her  . But I digress... I have lost a girlfriend or two because I always carry a knife.

RWS’s wife Karie here again:

Klattman,
Here is a short list of some of the knives and what I use them for or why I have them:
Benchmade 940 (blue plain edge): I just fell in love with the 940 design and had to have one. Mike was kind enough to get it for me as a Christmas gift two years ago. To be honest, I don’t like to use it when doing hard work because I don’t want to “hurt” it. It’s just my favorite all-occasion go-to knife to put in the pocket of my jeans when running off to town or on casual Fridays in the office.
Kershaw Rainbow Leek: Another one I fell in love with and Mike picked it up one day when I wasn’t looking. (I kinda like it when he does that…perhaps it absolves me of the guilt of spending a chunk of cash on myself.) This is the one knife that is the most sheeple friendly of any. I can slide it in the pocket of my dress slacks under my suit jacket or in the waistband of my skirt while at work and no one is the wiser. The ladies in the office love it because it is so pretty and the guys like it because of the spring! If you are looking for one to spark a woman’s interest, show her this one.
Benchmade model 31 Bali: Okay this one was just plain cute… yes, I called it cute. To be honest, I am baffled why I had to have this one. It is my favorite knife to carry when I am feeling rebellious… I have a few good outfits it goes well with too. Yeah, the knife does serve as a fashion accessory. I don’t have the patience to practice with it (frankly the idea of getting cut by the blade does not appeal to me, not for Mike’s lack of effort in teaching me).
Microtech Kestrel: This is one that I “stole” from my husband. It’s a great carry knife. I learned it wasn’t a good choice to wear to the office one day. The boss called me into her office because she couldn’t get some tape or string or something or other off another thing she had on her desk. She was somewhat taken aback by this particular blade, which I found strange as it’s the only one she ever raised an eyebrow about.
Spyderco Shabaria: Ah, another one I procured from my husband’s plethora of knives. I love to use this one out in the garden. It’s absolutely fantastic for cutting green vegetation. Not too great on the roses though (Mike’s mini AFCK worked better on the tough rose stems.) This one is so wicked looking too. There is some sick sense of satisfaction when I see the look of worry on someone’s face after I show him or her the blade!
CRKT M16 model 12: This is the best construction, work, beat-around knife I have in my knife chest. I have used it faithfully through many home improvement projects and one apartment remodeling over the last 3 years. A friend of ours fell in love with mine, talked me out of it and uses it every day he goes to work (he’s an electrician). It’s the only thing he carries. I was so bummed I let him have mine, we had to replace it within the month so I could feel whole again while working on the house.
Benchmade Big Spender: This is the world’s most expensive nail manicure tool. Hehehe It lives with my nail file and fingernail polish. It’s the perfect size to fit in the hand and clean the nails with, and works better than any of the fandangled nail tools I’ve ever tried to use.
Spyderco Endura: This one is clipped on the inside pocket of my winter coat (in summer it’s clipped to the inside of my jean jacket). The lanyard and positioning make it pretty easy to slip out of the pocket just in case. Sometimes I forget to grab a knife for my pocket but this little babe rides all over and never gets left out.
Leatherman: You know the typical multi-tool use. Mike finally got me one for Christmas this last year. YEA!

Enough of the folders, on to some of the fixed blades:
Becker BK10 Crewman: This one gets used for yard-grubbing, camping, and lives in the car or truck for emergency use. I found it was particularly good to me when limbing a tree we had removed from the yard and, yeah, I talked Mike out of it in less than a couple minutes. (You guys seeing a trend there? ~wicked grin~)
BarkRiver Highlander: Mike lets me “pretend” it’s mine. I don’t think we have another knife in the house that cuts as well as the Bark Rivers we own. They get used in the kitchen, or for whittling, or for general outdoors use. I think it’s pretty and very functional. This is one of the few fixed blades I took to work to show off.
Atkinson boot knife/dagger: This one sits in my jewelry box and looks pretty. Mike gave it to me as a gift one day. I love it just for the beauty and workmanship, not much else I can say.
5” Camp Knife made by my Daddy: What more can I say, my Daddy made it! I was pretty little and he forged it and another huge hacker…short sword… one week at work. (They were bored in the shop.) As I said in my previous post, I used to carry this one in my car while in high school. Now I want to preserve it and let it sit in the knife chest to show to people on special occasions, and to save to give to my son.

That’s enough of a “short list”. There are a few others that don’t get used much, but you get the idea.

Migo,
You would be shocked to know some of the “deals” my dad has found at garage sales, and on the side of the road…
My favorite story is when he bought a Randall for a quarter. He took it home, cleaned it up then went to the gun show with the knife strapped to his belt. He wound up selling it for $300.00.
There’s the Ruana story too…
But this post is getting too long winded and I need to get to bed.

G’night gentlemen!

~KarieAnn
