You guessed it. Yesterday at IG's (Wally World) we had a pretty productive day. Started out arriving aroung 10 AM, had to unload stuff from my car, beer, enough Kaowool to line 3 forges, and various other knife making things. The plan was to weld up a couple of forge bodies, 1 for Justin Mersier, and one for the raffle at IG's hammer in later this month. As I said, "enough Kaowool for 3 forges, well I've got a vertical that needs lining, I brought that along in case we had enough time to get that one lined, but we didn't :grumpy: . I also had planned on making a new pommel nut for damascus bowie that I've been working on, and making some damascus in IG's "Big Bertha" :D .

I got the forge bodies welded up, IG and Justin took Justin's forge over to another area for lining, while I got Big Bertha ready for some "Steel Squishing". First off, was the new pommel nut, which was to be made with wrought iron. I welded a small piece onto a lollypop stick, again to be formed using Bertha, this ended be a total disaster, I'll never use a press again for trying to make something as small as a pommel nut,,hammer and anvil only (for me anyway :D ). IG had a billet stack (approx 23 layers of bandsaw and pallet strap, and end pieces (for thickness) of 1084. This billet stack had been sitting around IG's for ,,,,, I don't know, but it was rusty as heck (notice I refrained from using Hell on the forum). IG squirt it down with WD 40 the night before to help loosen oxidation in the initial layers.

I got this stack up to dull red and started putting on flux, wire brushing, for flux, brushing, then started using Boric Acid to really get into the layers and clean them out. I did the Boric Acid thing a few heats, then onto the regular flux and welding. The weld came out great (hopefully no inclusions), I streached this out to the length of IG's forge approx. 16", cut it and then the second weld, again it came out good. I streached it out to 16" once more and running out of time, left it in the closed forge (after shut down) for annealing. Next time at IG's, will probably be the Hammer In, where I'll finish this billet, and at that time I'll put in a few layer of Nickel.

After Justin got his forge all lined and coated with ITC100, he and Wa,,Wa,,Wally fired her up for the first time, I know IG took a few pics of that, and I'm sure he'll post some.

Wa,,Wa,,Wally made some chricio, shoe richeee  whatever.

So all in all, (with the exception of the pommel nut, things went real good at Wally World :D

BBBBB Beaver, I think (  ) that you were working the WI to cold.
What temp do all of you use to forge WI?????
Yep!!!! Justin was happy with the way it turned out. ;) :D

As hot as possbile. A nice high yellow, almost welding heat if you're doing a lot of deformation.

Sounds like a good day. Can't wait to see pics of all the finished projects.

Here's the finished forge =)

Guys,
I really did have it hot. The forge temp. had not really been changed at all that day. The piece was only a couple of inchs long and about 1 1/8 dia. , doesn't take too long to heat up. My problem is IG  , he thinks everything should be done on a press:D, my problem? :jerkit: I listended. He's got a real nice 300# Fisher that would have drawn that out in one heat.

The damascus billet will get finished at the HI in New Bedford later this month. It only has the first weld done, the stack of band saw blade, and high carbon pallet strap, 39 pieces, about .041 per piece and a 1/8" piece of 1084 on each end, about 6" long. It welded out to 16" or so, and 3/8" thk.

Someone get a pic of him swinging that 300 lb fisher :D
Does any pallet strapping work? I can get boatloads of that from work. All in all it sounds like a good day in the shop.

nice forge. :)

As I go back to slurrying clay for my cinderblock and 2 inch pipe gas forge *sigh*- gotta start somewhere

Joe, pallet strapping should work well with some bandsaw blades for damascus. Try heat'g some up to non-magnetic, put it into cold water and hit it with a hammer on an anvil.
Joe, you are able to walk under the horn of my anvil without ducking your head. HEHEHEHEHE!!!!
:D

BBBBB Beaver!!!! You break something everytime you come here.:jerkit: :jerkit: I lucked out this time it was only a little piece of WI.:p

It cost under $200 for him to make it.

$200 I need to spend on handle materials and a drill press ;) - but yeah, if I knew how to make it I could work it up over the next month. Right now I'mnot even sure how much airflow I need/want in the pipe forge. Benzomatic torch....

(heck, right now I'm not even sure how I'm going to do on forging. I'm only on my second set of blades out of recycled saws. Of the first 4, 2 heat treated well enough to hold edges, 2 look like they have to go back in. And my finish work needs work...)

Justin: The Easter Bunny was good to you. Did you play with it all day Sunday????:D :D

I played around with it a bit. The regulator seems to be a little wonkey and I seemed to be getting inconsistant pressure from it, so I might swap over to the other regulator and hose I have if I cant figure out what's happening.

Working on that big bar of 3/4" round O1 I have is much much easier now though! I got a good section drawn out into flat bar shape now, in a short time I got 10x as much work done on the bar as I did in the same amount of time with the anemic single burner venturi forge I was using previously.

Wa..Wa..Wally, How could I possibly have a "good" day at Wally World without breaking or burning something :jerkit: Wait the HI HEHEHE
If you break something at the HI, you better make sure Kook drives you home, because if you fall asleep in my front room, you will be in a heap of trouble boy.  You know how us OLE BIKERS are???
