wondering about a Case

IIRC, the difference in performance was not large.

just slightly off topic
anyone put a rough rider through this kind of work?
does the rough rider hold up to this kind of use? I am beginning to think it just might...but thought I would ask if anyone has any experience with this...

I can't speak on the abilities of the Rough Riders, but just about any functional knife should be able to manage those jobs with ease. They're not particularly demanding. As long as it's sharp, and the blade isn't in danger of falling off of the knife.... then you should be okay.

I was working in Automotive, Sporting Goods and Hardware at a discount store back then. Gerber was the only company I found running their steel hard at the time. Night and day difference in performance and price. A Folding Sportsman II would have cost you as much as both those Case knives, and the single blade would have kept an edge as long as all five of the Case blades put together,

Absolutely true.

And you no doubt remember that the Gerber folding tools were highly recommended over Leatherman tools just a few years later. I had one, and the stainless blade was really great. I was hiking a lot then, and the Gerber multitool outperformed in just about every test when they compared Gerber to Leatherman (remember when they only had a few models apiece?) in my backpacking and outdoor sportsman magazines.

You know, at one time, Gerber made a helluva knife. I still have a folder from way back when, and a Silver Knight I have just about worn smooth.

assuming you didn't chip it to death on hard stuff. I know what construction workers do to their knives, I've been one.

I only used knives for slicing and cutting back in those days unless I had no choice. I only carried traditional patterns, my favorite being a large copperhead jack and a stockman.

Today I am not as nice to my work knives. I have a less expensive knife that gets every dirty job clipped to my pocket but have a medium stockman, a peanut, a butterbean, or something else small an really sharp. Those knives still don't face any hard, hard treatment.

A wise man once said there's just knife use (i.e. cutting stuff), and knife abuse.

"Hard use?" No such thing.

It's either one or the other, and a good quality, sharp knife (like the Case mini trapper in question) is up to any cutting task for which it was designed. If the task at hand is too much, then go get a screwdriver, or putty knife, or chisel, or saw.

Perhaps, just maybe, all of us might define hard use differently. If you are referring to my post about "hard, hard treatment" no need to read anything into the post that wasn't there. I never said what I considered to be hard treatment. I never said what I considered hard use. Nor did I say that I used my knives for tasks that were "too much". Those are your words. I didn't see anyone else on this thread say them, either. Just you. Again, if you are referencing my post, your imaginative hyperbole has far exceeded what I wrote.

If you are advising the group, I hope they take your sage counsel based on keen observation (like not using a CASE mini trapper for a saw). If you are advising me.... well.... no need. Waaaaaay ahead of you.

Of course, if you weren't referencing my post, just ignore this one.

Just rambling; not directed at anyone in particular. (In general, the guys who need to take my point to heart, don't hang out in this sub-forum.)

just an opinion, I work as event organizer and I use knives every single day, many steels, manufacturers, HTs..
the case SS knives get used along with D2 and CRK knives and they hold fine, it's not a magical steel but it cuts, the geometry helps a LOT so it's good and case knives are fine working tools

haven't yet had an occasion where it has let me down, my case edc is my food knife, when it dulls it gets sharp in no time
