Wondering if GEC makes French Kate knife with a stainless blade?

Would consider one for gifting as a purse knife for my daughter... but just have not seen anything like that. GEC's 440c offering would be perfect for gifting to a person that is not really a knife person, and that would more appreciate the lower maintenace of such a steel.

I've seen Rough Rider versions, don't know if that would be a option or a route you want to go.

Pete

On a side note my wife has had a Rough Rider peanut that she had for a little over a year and likes it keeps a edge, and she's pretty rough on things, I think I touched up the edge once.

No stainless #28s as of yet. I ended up giving my sister a grape jigged bone #25EO in 440C that's now her favorite knife. Another one uses an abalone Canal Street Half Moon Trapper I gave her.

Aww.. that is too bad, thanks for verifying that, guys. I was hoping to possibly gift her one if they existed. Wanted it to be something she and I could be proud of.. and the Chinese made goes against my grain for knives.. but thanks anyway :-)

That's too bad Jimmy. "2Dead's" suggestion for a #25EO in 440C seems like a good substitute for the French Kate.

One thing though - Chinese knives are coming on strong and I think we'll be seeing more and more of them. Many of them are of great fit and finish with very good steel. Just ask "black mamba". I think you'd be surprised how many people here not only have them but collect them.

My reason for wanting a French Kate design is that my daughter has always been a shoe person... she loves having a good selection of girly shoes.... So, you can see why the lady leg with some decent high heel shoes, would be kinda neat. Another factor is my having purchased a very nice quality Forge De Laguiole knife for her boyfriend (made in France). I want to keep the quality not only high for her to be gifted knife, but also the added pride of it being American made... it having Americans behind it's manufacture. The Laguiole was purchased for her boyfriend because he has some French blood in him, and because he was a history major in college, and the Laguiole will offer some pride in ownership in quality, heritage, and the knife's history. I stay away from chinese made knives... even if they are now being better made, just not my thing :-)

Well then your choice is limited for a French Kate the. By the sound of it that pattern would make a perfect gift.

I understand what you are saying about the Rough Rider as I felt the same. But.....while impatiently waiting for my Case Trapperlock to come back from repair, I bought the Rough Rider version in smooth tobacco bone just to try. I was presently surprised - the only bad part is the back filler has a gap at one end. But for $12 I certainly can't complain.

I see 2 options for you. First is buy the GEC and give it a good cleaning, oil the joint, and give it a coat of wax. I think that would hold it well enough under light use for a few months. Each time you see her you could give it a touch up.

Second - swallow your pride a little like I did and spend the $12 and try a Rough Rider - you just might be pleasantly surprised. Also, I totally understand and agree with you about the country or origin, but the pattern is also what you are buying for that special gift.

The man said he doesn't want Chinese and gave his reasons. Give it a break! Not everyone is willing to compromise their values for a low price!

Hahaha... I guess I will simply put some more thought into what other gift(s) she'll like... because Rough Rider is not going to be a substitute. All good, though, and I do appreciate the advice on the option, guys... thanks again :-)

I was simply giving my opinion of his options - GEC being one of them.

Not sure if they came in a stainless variety, but didn't case make lady legs back in the day? They are not a current production, but you could probably find some out there...

That's a bit of a stretch GronK. Nobody is compromising their values when buying off-shore knives but you have a point. The OP wants a USA Stainless French Kate and if he looks around, may be able to find that pattern in stainless at some of the auction sites.

Maybe you could talk Joel Chamblin into making you one. Joel has made a slip joint or two I believe. :D

I asked about the GEC brand, and that is because I like the pattern's execution, and having their carbon steel version, let's me appreciate their craftsmanship. I was only hoping I'd be able to get that gec quality, that american manufacture.... and those old school methods they use. Again, I thank you all for the ideas... but GEC was what I was hoping for on this pattern... I like to use thought in gift giving... so my finding some other idea will eventualy happen ;-)

I know what you mean Jimmy. If the #28 were available in 440C and their shell and acrylics like they are in 1095 then I would have picked one up for each of my sisters as well. I don't trust them to maintain 1095.
