wont stay sharp

I am sorry Mr. Kanter but don't you think you should have taken the complaint to Mr Reeve before posting here? Wouldn't you, as a knifemaker want the same courtesy? By the way I think your work is very, very fine.

He has. Did you not read all of his posts?

Anyway, I hear this problem a lot, but have not experienced it on the two that I have owned. I have cut down boxes all day with mine at work and never had it lose it's edge or tear the cardboard at all. A few swipes on my Sharpmaker, and it does it all again the next day. I've been using mine at work for almost a year now every day with never a single problem with edge holding. I never reprofiled the edge and have only touched it up on my Sharpmaker the entire time. It has maintained a shaving sharp edge with ease and admirable longevity.

Yes, sir I did. Did you, read my reply? Because he said he sent it back and had the blade replaced 3 times, my reply had to do with asking Mr. Reeve not just someone in customer service. With a company like CRK if I had those problems I would ask to speak to the man in charge before I put a derrogatory comment on the web. It's just courtesy, specially from one knifemaker to another. But hey that is just me.

I doubt Mr. Reeve has time to personally discuss every problem a customer has. He bought a production knife, not a custom. I think taking the problem to the customer service department multiple times is effort enough. I would feel pretty arrogant if I called demanding to speak with the man himself. Honestly, the notion that you should withhold any negative comments about a product without first seeking customer service has always seemed like a whiny, defensive notion, anyway.

Anyway, on topic: I have never, in my life, even heard of a knife going dull from cutting regular, box tape. This, obviously, has nothing to do with whether or not the knives should be harder, as even a China-made 420J2 blade at 53RC should be able to cut regular tape all day without losing its edge. I can hardly believe the allegations, honestly.

Interesting thread. My edc is an older small Sebenza with a BG42 blade. I have the same problem. It takes a very good edge, but does not seem to hold it very long compared to other knives I have. I have no problem putting a shaving edge on it and it doesn't get hard use, but even opening half a dozen envelopes seems to diminish it cutting ability. It is not dull and will cut well for a fairly long time. It just loses it's hair popping edge quickly. I have maintained the factory bevel.

I have looked at the edge with a 10x loupe and there is no rolling. The steel does not feel "soft" on the stone.

All I can say is my BG-42 lasts and lasts, but the S30v is a bit inferior compared to my Bg-42. I guess that's to be expected though. :) Imo all knives are just different animals. I think A $300 sebenza has magical qualities, but that could be more psychological as well because we have spent quite a bit on it. I use my sebbies but I do do touch ups every once in a while on the white stones so I really have no problems ever.

P.s Awesome knives bro

One of the best questions asked has yet to be answered.

Is there adhesive left on the blade from cutting the tape?

Jerry Busse had a great story about someone who was unhappy with the sharpness of one of his knives after a chopping trip through the forest. He sent it back to Busse, the crew wiped it off with WD40 (to remove the sap) and it was good as new.

I used my Sebenza, new in December, to break down christmas boxes. I purposely abused it, making more cuts and even stabbing it into the cardboard pile. I counted 100 plus cuts and there is absolutely no difference in the edge. No damage, nothing. It still shaves. This is better performance than my prior D2 Paramilitary and BM Ritter Grip.

If I was Chris, I don't know what I'd respond to this. There are a lot of very satisfied people and then one or two that don't think their knife is sharp or the S30V doesn't do well. What's he supposed to say? There's a 95% probability that the blade(s) are fine.

I'm very critical of my knives, especially a 500 dollar user. My Sebenza has honestly exceeded my every expectation.

 I've had completely similar experiences with my two Sebenzas.
