Wood bleaching ?

I've heard that bleaching wood keeps it from darkening too much when the oil/sealant is applied. Is this a common thing? When would you, if at all, apply the bleach? To the scales before riveting and gluing or after they are mounted and formed to shape?
Thanks for any input.

I'm in the hardwood flooring buisness and when we bleach a floor it's the last step before any finish is applied. The bleach only penetrates the surface to a certain depth depending on the density of the wood. So the wood should be shaped and finish sanded before bleaching. I'd make sure the rest of the knife is well protected because the bleach is extremly caustic. Rubber gloves are a must also. It's a mixture of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide and will burn like hell if it gets on you. Its also a good idea to neutralize the wood with vineger after bleaching to prevent any wierd reactions with whatever your using for a finish. Hope this helps some.
