wood blocks wider then 2" are a myth

you could also simply do a hidden tang and pin the handle. avoid all the threaded tang/nut drama.

I thought of it Jerid but I will be going with a full tang. It's much simpler for my skill level and it would only make physical sense to be a superior design in strength being the same amount of force will be applied to a wider area rather then a 1/2 inch tang(at least I think so). I thought I could maintain integrity but at the same time somewhat maintain an appealing look.

I really like the notch for a pot handle. As a big believer in one pot meals in the back country that would be handy for lifting and moving a hot pot.

Not trying to hijack the thread as I have been trying to wrap my head around this concept and am going to try it. Would it not make drilling the holes difficult?
If this we were my project I'd be looking to cut an angle on the block where it meets the guard to help accommodate for the drop in the heel.

yes it can. helps to use an end mill to get the holes started on an angled surface. Nothing good comes easy. [emoji6]

I dont have a mill but I have some bits. I will crank up the speed on my drill press and give it a shot. I have some cocobolo blocks I'm going to try and thought they may be too narrow. Thanks.

I'll be trying this with a scrap piece of 2x4 to see how it will work. I'll be making 2 knives... A full tang and hidden tang to experiment with. It will be a learning curb. comments and suggestions are always welcomed. I'm looking to improve anyway possible

It also works to drill the hole into the back before cutting the angle. I've done it both ways and really don't have a preference either way.

Let's step back a minute.

Have you ever built a knife from scratch before? What is your experience using knives of that type? What's your background in metal shop/fabrication? How many times have you camped out for a week or more and had to rely on one cutting implement?

Is this design something you developed over several years of working in the field and in the shop?

I apologize if I'm offending you, but honestly... if I had to guess if you had built knives before, my answer would be "hell no". This entire project looks like something dreamed up without any experience. Sorry mate, it's a bad design to start with.

I do NOT mean to discourage you. My aim is to see you actually build something that works! If I were asked to assist a novice or intermediate knifemaker... that design would certainly not be my first recommendation.

what does having previous experience in knife making have to do with pointing me into a direction to get a wider block them 2"? I'm not offended at all. If you think the design is flawed please explain and tell me how. If you're aim is to see someone accomplish something functional why not recommend and explain instead of simply going off on a tangante and simply leaving. There are something's I don't agree with sure but I will back a statement up with reason and logic instead of just an opinion. Like I said , if the design is poorly thought out , I can accept that ... Just point out and explain to me where. Areyoj saying the blade is a poor design or the tang is a poor design or both? I guess what you're saying is the knife will not be able to cut or chop effectively? I may not be a professional knife maker but I have used my fair amount of knives in some of the harshest ways. I live in a remote area of northern Canada and being outdoors on a wolf hunt tracking a wolf for days using a pack and snow shoes I rely on my knife for chopping branches to melt ice or snow for water or for cooking , chopping ice to check thickness or to get water , knapping flint , digging etc. Like I said , if you're going to comment , please explain and show me where the flaw is in order to better myself. All I got from you is an opinion ... Which is not helpful... And you know what they say about opinions.

Hey man!! This is Steve cox what size block do you need I probably have something that will work just let me know the dimensions maybe a chunk of cocobolo or Purple Heart or something I'm sure I can hook you up email or text me 6017548914 or 1littlesteve@gmail.com

I appreciate it guys but I will hold off on the hidden tang for now. I have some G10 here I might use instead and make it a full tang.
