Howdy,

During a camping trip this summer, I decided to attempt something I’ve always wanted to try – carving a wood chain. When I was young, I had seen wood chains my grandpa had made, but I had never tried myself. I understood the basic concept, but I knew I would have to learn as I went.

I took a dried Ash branch and using a combination of knifes, started in. I used the following blades:

RAT IZULA
RAT RC-4
Case Barlow
Leatherman Wave

It was fun and educational. My first mistake was using a branch. The center was hard like a knot. I should have figured that out sooner! The second problem was the small diameter of the branch. It made the carving A LOT harder!

After making a few links, I’d had enough and decided to go to the other end and just add one link so I could hang it up.

I am happy with the end result. If you’ve never tried it before, it definitely is a good learning experience figuring out exactly how to do it.

Next time, I will use a softer wood, larger size, with clear, straight grain – no branches!

That's great. I carved a ball in a box and that was quite a challenge too. The ball looks more like an acorn but it stays in the box and moves freely.

That looks really fantastic, great work!

That really is a great demonstration of skill! Thanks for posting. Going to have to try that some time. Very hard for me to get gratification from things that take less than 3 h to completion....

I may be mistaken but... I belive there was a woodenchain in the movie best little whorehouse in texas, I know I have seen one in some movie. great job though!

wow.. nice work man.. i have wanted to carve one of those forever...:o seems like it would be a cool project...

Wow, that is really awesome. Honestly I think I might wanna try it. Or attempt it I should say... Very nice, thanks for sharing!

Pretty original. I like it, especially the idea that the whole chain comes from a single piece

I'm also curious what this looks like. You mean like a ball inside a cage where you stuck a tool through the slits to carve out the ball inside?
