Howdy,
During a camping trip this summer, I decided to attempt something Ive always wanted to try carving a wood chain. When I was young, I had seen wood chains my grandpa had made, but I had never tried myself. I understood the basic concept, but I knew I would have to learn as I went.
I took a dried Ash branch and using a combination of knifes, started in. I used the following blades:
RAT IZULA
RAT RC-4
Case Barlow
Leatherman Wave
It was fun and educational. My first mistake was using a branch. The center was hard like a knot. I should have figured that out sooner! The second problem was the small diameter of the branch. It made the carving A LOT harder!
After making a few links, Id had enough and decided to go to the other end and just add one link so I could hang it up.
I am happy with the end result. If youve never tried it before, it definitely is a good learning experience figuring out exactly how to do it.
Next time, I will use a softer wood, larger size, with clear, straight grain no branches!
