Wood Chain – Carving with the RAT IZULA

Great thread Colonel. A good reminder that knives and wood are good for more than fuzzy sticks.

Here's a spoon I whittled for my wife on our anniversary. We were each supposed to make something rather than buy it, so it was the perfect opportunity to actually have some fun. :) It didn't turn out perfect, but I learned a lot during the process.

I'm trying to crank out another one by Christmas for my mother.

For an anniversary shouldn't it be a love spoon?

Just kidding ... though a love spoon might be a project to do, once one has mastered a standard spoon.

I am not sure how I missed this thread.... wow! that is some serious craving skills! Now I gotta try.... :)

Nice work guys!

I'm going to have to get to work on a spoon. I broke my spork somewhere along the line and had to dig deep in my MRE this weekend. Trying to keeping your fingers out of those things aint easy.

Very cool! I also ditto the comments on your cord wrap--great. I should get some wood and see what monstrosities I could create...

YES, it should have been a love spoon, but I had some bad slitting in the wood during the early stages (part of the learning curve) so I had to cut my losses, so to speak, and salvage what I could.

Is that what the knife looked like right after carving? It doesn't even look like it was used. Very impressive!

Yep, it's a laminated blade Mora. I whittle indoors mostly, so with clean wood and clean hands, the knife fairs pretty well. I also used a crooked knife for the inside portion of the spoon and it looks the same. I soaked the handles with linseed oil, but that's it. It'll probably take years before they've got a good honest look to 'em.

I really like the wrap on your izula. is there a video or something o how to do that wrap?

Not that I know of. I just started with a basic wrap, and then once I got to the lanyard hole, I tried several methods to finish it out. The one I finally used was my own design, based on trial and error. The final knot is a square knot in the center of the hole, with the ends pushed through and burned on the other side.

Now I need an Izula! Or I could make a huge wood chain with my RC-4. Awesome work though. I've never seen anything like that before.
