Custom Knife Makers Wood Craft/Utility Field knife Contest

Custom Knife makers of Blade Florums are invited to create a knife in this class in any style they feel that will excell in the following list of tasks that the knives will be judged on. The knife must be made completely in house, only the heat treat may be outsourced. Knife makers will provide a spec sheat with the knife and disclose if heat treatment was outsourced or not. The only other restriction is that the knives have a blade that does not exceed 5". The knives should be recieved by tester by November 20th (if that is cool with yall)

The knives will be judged on the following:

Fit and Finish

Comfort/ease of use

Edge retention

Ease of sharpening

Task performance

The knives will be rated from 1-5 (5 being an excellent score.)

The total score will be added at end of competition, and the knives then will be ranked.

Knife tasks

  • Shelter Material procurement. (Push cuts through sapling, tree limb cuting, etc)
  • Cordage Cutting (push cuts through various types of cordage)
  • One stick Fire (light battoning, shaving with edge and spine, fire steel strike)
  • Figure 4 Trap Carving (carving and knotching)
  • Spoon carving (extended carving and whitling)
  • Bow Drill Fire Construction (light battining, drilling, carving)
  • Food Preperation (slicing meat, tamatos, Peeling potatos etc..)
  • Small Game Processing (this all depends on what I can get my hands on.)
  • Tent Pegs (whittling both soft and hard wood pegs. one side to a point, the other with a knotch)
  • Long term whittling. (whittling a 3" diameter section of wood to nothing in the hammer grip with and with out a glove on)

The knives will be scored on how well they perform the tasks and how comfortable the knives were while completing the tasks.

There will be more than 1 evaluator. Each evaluator will have to perform every task with each knife. They will score each knife and write down a small description of how the knife performed at the end of each task. There will be photos and video documentation throughout the process. This is not going to be a 1 day affair as you can see, so I would like to keep the evaluators to no more than 4. The evaluators should have a good knowledge of knives and the tasks to be performed. No knife will be abused or pushed beyond their limits. If minor damage such as an edge roll occurs, it will be documented and the knife will loose 1 point. They will not be sharpened till all tasks are complete. They will then be sharpened before the next tester uses the knife.

You will be able to see how each tester scored each knife on every task. Keep in mind that the outcome of this contest will only be the oppinion of the testers, nothing more and nothing less. This is and will be a friendly competition with no hurt feeilings at the end. When the contest is over, the knives will be shipped back to their makers for them to do what ever they want with them.

Knife makers, please respond in this thread with an "I'm in" and I will place your name on the list above. If you guys feel November 20th is not enough time, please say so in the other thread linked. You guys decide on the cut off date and I will change the date here.

Thank you,

Tony

This will be awesome to watch. I cant participate but a great thread is about to be underway boys!!

Awesome! There is no set limit of knifemakers Nick. I am glad you're in!

Thanks Tony, I figure I gotta start making more knives. I am going through the big D and This is looking like it's gonna be my only source of income. So, that means I'm gonna try and go full time in the spring. See, I work for my inlaws and because of the D they will be firing me when it's done.

So bring it on

Nick:)

Does the knife have to be a sole authorship?...I am not set up to heat treat..but I can make the knife otherwise.
If someone can heat treat it for me, then I am in.

Gene, ask the question in the other thread bro. We'll let the other knifemakers decide that.

I still think a 'assembly/NFS/partial build/whatever' group would be cool to have, but that adds an insane amount of work to the project

Actually- on the edit- I wouldn't mind seeing a specific challenge just for that
