I was at Barnes & Noble today drinking a soda and reading books and I spotted one on wood finishing. It was really way over my head, but I did see a tip that may help us, since the woods we use are typically quite a bit dofferent from the ones used by the furniture business. Anyway, they suggested that if you are going to somehow finish your oily hardwoods with varnish, "oil" (not all "oil" finishes actually contain oil), etc, the best way to do it is to first wipe the surface of the wood clean with an oil-dissolving solvent, then quickly add the product you want to finish with. This eliminates the wood's natural oil from the surface and allows better penetratuonof your varnish or whatever you are using. Haven't tried it myself.

Hi Chiro, it also helps if you heat the oil some before you apply it, just warm works fine. Seems to soak into the wood better.

Jake, I already do that. I like Tung oil. The tip was to get the wood's oils off the surface so the finish will soak in better. If you use slightly heated oil AND the solvent technique, the results should be pretty good...
