I found some scrap wood flooring in the dumpster and thought it might make good scales and or sheaths. Its 10mm thick and solid stuff (not laminate). Anyone have any ideas what this is? Thanks folks in advance.

Zebra.

Only downside is that it has large open grain which must be filled before a durable topcoat, mainly to seal the filler.

Thanks guys! Im no wood guru but i have seen a lot a zebra wood and i dont think that is what it is. It doesnt have the depth and chatoyance (sp?) that zebra has. Now bamboo didnt even cross my mind because of the color differential. The grain texture is exactly like bamboo and that would make perfect sense. It is dense as heck and very stringy. Ive never seen bamboo that dark but maybe thats the way they process it. Sure is some beautiful stuff tho! Stranded bamboo eh?

OK some more research done based on boogaloo. Im convinced it is bamboo...Strand Woven Bamboo they call it and is engineered wood. Thanks fellas! It will make some good sheaths for my e-tohs and Thai blades!

Cool. I've never seen bamboo even close to that, but I really like it. Bamboo is great stuff!

Sorry for the mis-information.
