Wood ID Help

I was given this wood and have no idea what it is. It's super dense and hard. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks!

I'm not an expert, but it does look like some mesquite I have

Easiest thing to do is rule out possibilities. It could be a rosewood, or walnut or countless other things. To test if its an exotic the easitest thing to do is soak a rag in acetone or another solvent and wipe the surface. Does it come off stained with a brownish splotch? If so, its rosewood.

It certainly looks like regular walnut to me. The colour and grain patterns look right to me.

Ok, thank you all for the imput! I'll try that rosewood test with acetone and see what happens.
