picked up this because i like how it looks, but have no idea what it is.

looks like bubinga to me, if it is really heavy and very hard that would be my guess. wipe it down with a damp sponge you'll get a better view of the grain.

Yup. If the board is thick enough (I can't tell in the photo), it might be worth trying to get some quartersawn blanks out of it.

Get the board wet, and take it into the sun and check out the figure on all faces. The edges of your board might look better than the large faces.

The orientation of the board's face relative to the growth rings is very important. Sometimes the appearance of the tangent face (flat sawn) is preferable to the radial face (quartersawn); sometimes it's the other way around. It often comes down to personal preference. Quartersawn lumber tends to have better mechanical properties.
