Wood ID

I just asked my wife to smell the cut wood and she said it kind of smelled like perfume. It's not unpleasant.

Last thing is to wipe afresh piece with the acetone cloth. Report what it looks like or better yet post a picture right after you wipe it.

The one on the left is natural and the one on the right was wiped.

Yep. Its 100% blackwood. Rosewood is often used in perfume, while ebony smells a lot like old socks. Wiping ebony yields mostly clean with a few black streak while woods in the rosewood family stain the rag completely in a deep brown. Personally i prefer blackwood over ebony. Its more stable, doesnt have nearly the cracking issue, just as hard if not harder, smells nice and i prefer working it, and it doesnt make you smell like a locker room.

Thanks. This is good to know. Thanks also for the Tung Oil advice. I bought some and used it on the Bocote and it looks really nice.

Happy to help. You ever need help with wood I.Ds or info just ask. Im working on making a full write up of the exotics characteristics and advantages/ disadvantages from a knife makers perspective.

Cool That will definitely be a good read. I do have a few other types of wood that I don't know what they are and will contact you once I get around to using them.

Approx how many coats of Tung oil will it take to fill the tiny cracks in the grain (Bocate) or should I be using something else?

Super glue. Tung wont build a good film. Fill the holes with super, wait till its 100% dray, sand with 400-500 grit lightly and repeat till it is flush. Sand and polish smooth.

Thanks. I assume I have to do a progression from 500 back to 2500 or can I sand the super glue at a higher grit?
