Here are a couple of pictures of some scales that I am using and I am not sure what it is. Someone gave them to me a couple of years ago and I do not remember what they said they were. I believe that they are either ebony or african blackwood, just not sure which. I had thougth they were ebony but the more I thought about it the more unsure I was. If some of you could help me with it I would really appreciate it. Also once this is identified some suggestions on finish would be great to. Many thanks in advance.

My guess was first ebony, but I think it looks more like African Blackwood. Do the pictures represent the color well? This seems a lot more gray than blackwood.

When I compare the scales to the picture the picture seems a little more gray than the scales do.

African Blackwood is a form of Rosewood.
If you hand sand it a little, It will have a sweet smell,
like Rosewood. Ebony won't.
