This is my first post so if it needs to be somewhere else let me know. I’ve never made a knife before and wanted to give it a try. I sketched out a design I liked and I did a little research on steels. I don’t really have any specific purpose in mind, but if it’d be anything a durable survival knife would probably be it. I looked and figured m4 steel would be best but I didn’t know about a handle. Would Turkish walnut be good? If you have a better steel or wood please say so, I need suggestions.
( keep in mind this is my first post and knife so it’s probably bad)

Here it comes... from one new knife maker to another. I have already seen this reply about a hundred times:

  • What kind of tools are using to make your knife? Fancy belt grinder and power tools or hand files and hand tools
  • Are you heat treating the knife yourself or sending it out?
  • If you are heat treating it yourself what are you using to accomplish that?

These questions must be answered before people can really help you.

EDITED PS: Good luck and welcome to the site too !!!

I have basic power tools like a drill and dremel but the rest would be hand tools. I don’t have anything good to heat it up for a heat treatment so I’ll have to send it out.

Welcome....First things first: this is a place to ask questions about knife making so you can make good choices along the journey. The one recommendation (the Count should be along at some point) is to check out the "Sticky's" at the top of this section there is one with the good information compiled so you can find the topics you need along the way. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with all the hand tools required so you have them on hand when you begin...nothing worse than getting in the groove only to find out a simple tool brings the project to a stand still...Good Luck and Enjoy the Journey!

hello. turkish walnut would work, but for a survival knife it would be best stabilized, or resin filled. canvas and linen micarta are great for survival knives, very durable and will not warp. you mentioned m4 steel, look up the heat treating process to make sure you have the right equipment before you start.

Looking at the linen micarta when it says something like 1/8 as the thickness is that for one side or both.

EDIT: also I like the look of wood so is there anywhere I can get micarta with the look of wood

if you outsource HT I'd go for a stainless. CPM154 is a good one, I made my first one out of it with handtools only.
Walnut makes a good handle if you want it a bit tougher go for man made micarta/G10 etc or if you want to keep it natural go for a rosewood like cocobolo/bocote/kingwood/etc.
Make a cardboard template of your design and play around with it for some time and adjust your drawings acordingly

Ok thanks for the advice.

micarta comes in 3/8" also, that is the most popular thickness. natural micarta resembles wood.
