Wood or Horn?

BLO for wood mineral oil for horn ! --( technically i think mineral oil works on both)

I use Mineral oil on both don't see a reason to use BLO when I already have the mineral oil. besides, it gives everything a yellow shade. Soak them for a day when i first get them, wipe them off, then repeat weekly for a month, Then I figure they are saturated so Ren Wax the whole thing and enjoy looking at em. Every once in a while I check to see if they appear to be drying out. So far nothing has. But if they do. A quick clean to remove the wax layer and back in the mineral oil over night at least.

I would imagine that wood absorbs shock better? I like horn more though. More of a primal thing I guess. Now the real question, Wood vs Horn vs Bone.

I think I like BLO because the yellow brings out the contrast better? Its just what I always used!!!! probably listen to shav !!!

LOL!! I am FAR from the expert. I am just passing along the basic things I have learned from here, tempered with some frugality of budget that sees spending less on BLO means more HI Khuks purchased :D

I think mineral oil is the main ingredient in hooflex anyway- as for BLO, i found out here its not near so natural as it sounds ; they dont actually use "boiled " they use "any solvent we can throw at it to make it dry quick"-- so on balance mineral oil is the best "all rounder" hands down. was too tantalized from what it did to gunstocks to think clearly

Ah, I had already known that "Boiled" hasn't meant boiled in decades at least. Yeah, some of the stuff they use in BLO is really disgusting. I have spent hours trying to decide between BenMatte Danish Tung Oil from Daly's in Seattle or BLO on a beautiful traditional Juglans Regia stock. I usually wind up with the Tung Oil though something about how it looks on that wood...perfection.

I've been using BLO on all my military rifle stocks for years. I love the stuff, I dilute it a bit with mineral spirits on wooden stocks to help it absorb easier. I prefer a finish I can reapply when needed instead. I don't like "sealed" finishes because they require stripping for repair or else it looks like a cheap fix.

Be careful with Linseed oil rags... the rags can spontaneously combust...YIKES! I always keep rags I just used in a metal sink or in the middle of the shop floor if I leave for the night without cleaning up the shop.

I think I will stick with the mineral spirits for the horn grip and leave the BLO for my M1, M14, Finnish M39, Cetme, and all my other wooden toys hehehe...

BLO runs in my veins for the same reasons. Easy to replace. Can steam out a ding and throw some more on it.

All my grips get BLO or they get nothing at all.

I've been using Ballistol on horn. It's mostly mineral oil anyhow. I put it on the Gehazi Bowies and they instantly POP! Amazing transformation. It's been around forever but I've only in the last couple years discovered it. Good stuff.

I'M BACK! Got my 3rd quarter allowance 33 bucks cash money so I'm back to Gold Member status. Was gonna go Basic but I need the 100PM's to store all Pugs, Ndogs and Sir Gehazi's messages. Life is good.

Welcome back Mr.B! That looks much better now with the pics!
I use BLO mostly but when im lazy I rub everything down with mineral oil since I keep it handy anyway. Fortunately my guitar takes the same care as my Khuks. I can leave a can of mineral oil out without it drying out so it is usually more convenient. BLO left out gets kinda thick and snotty after a while but it sure works well for a deep shine!
