So I’ve been working on my first knife that isn’t a railroad spike and it’s a 19” Bowie with bocote scales. I have the pins in and the handles epoxied and the scales sanded to the knife. My question is what is left to do the handle? Do I just round the handle some and then rub a few coats of tru oil on the bocote scales and that’s it? They are sanded with a 220 grit belt and looks nice just looking for guidance on where to go from here and what I should by to finish it. Thanks in advance

Bocote is a beautiful wood, I’m on a phone so the pics are small but it looks great! I usually sand to 400 G. It for depend on how grippy you want the handle.. I make Culinary which is a little different that a field Bowie... I wouldsand to 400 and if it’s to slick work your way back down till you are happy and do a few coats of the Tru oil if you like..

Does wax work better? I’m close to a wood craft so I could get some wax. Would I just apply it the wood and wipe it off with a cloth?

I use a lot of bocote and that's sure some nice stuff ya got there. I hand sand to 600 then very lightly buff with pink scratchless using a clean buff. I finish the whole knife with a coat of Mother's carnuba car wax. I don't use any wood finish on bocote, haven't seen a need.

Traded with a luthier for my bocote.

That looks great! After applying the wax do you have to buff it? Do you just get a buffing wheel that’s not been used and buff the handle with the wax on it?

Yes I have a separte buffer using loose buffs just for buffing the wax. Some really light woods like olive I will buff by hand but the bocote goes on the buffer.
