Hi my dad just cut a big dead maple down in our friends yard and it was spalted I got a couple of really nice pieces of it that I manged to save some how but the problem is there only 1/2 inch thick I would like to know if that is thick enough to make a scale from if at any way possible this is the best looking wood that ive ever seen any help would be great thanks.

Spalted wood must be stabilized since it is way too soft to be used as a knife handle. 1/2" is fine for a scale.

1/2 Inch Thick! you could rip that down the middle and have enough for 2 knives! most ready made scales are about 1/4 - 3/8 inch thick. I think you might be thinkin about a "Bowie Block" those are usually drilled through and the tang fixed into them with epoxy or a pommell nut. you could glue them together with good ole elmer's wood glue and turn ya a bowie block out of it.

anywho way to scavenge good handle stock! :D
