i was wondering if a wood splitter could be used as a press. maybee something like welding up some chanel iron to some hardend steel like a block with a v cut in it and have the angle iron to matche the splitter and drilling wholes in it to bolt it on to make is still usable as a wood splitter.

would that work? what ton splitter would work?

harbor freight has an electric 4 ton for about $400

Non of them I've used would have a fast enough travel speed. Fred

Wood splitters work fine when converted to forging presses. You need a 22 or 28 ton unit. One that has a flip up to vertical chassis is good, but you will have to add some reinforcement to the rail. It should already have a two-stage valve. If not change it to one.
My unit is a horizontal 32 ton splitter.

doesn't need speed if theres power there. the local garage bods are related to the local bulldozing contracting firm, so the splitters thay've made use old 60T double acting haydraulic rams and a 1300cc engine running though the lowest gearing of an old cars gearbox (with the gearshift stick welded in place) to run the hydralic pump.

has a 3 foot movement, the wedge is formed from hardened .75" steel with a nose cap welded on to increase the angle of the point, and a stop bar welded around the rear of the ood platform so the wedge comes to rest fully retracted just inside it, so if a block is too tough to be split in one chop, by reversing the action, the wood is pushed off. Something you can't do with a lot of the cheap low powered single action wood splitters that are to be found out there. :P
