I was thinking of finding my own handle material and either sending the blanks off to be stabilized or try my hand at stabilizing them. I went for a walk in the woods this morning and found a few stumps that had rotted away and left a very hard inter core. However I have no idea what type of wood I have. I didn't pick up any pine lighter, i assume with the sap content, its prob not useable for handles? Is there anyone here that can tell me what type of woods I found or point me to a good "wood ID site"? Also, what do people splash on the wood to bring out the color/grain/pattern? What's the best way to post pics of the wood?

best source for wood id i have found http://www.wood-database.com/ for wood like this, dry in house for a day or two, make in to handle, finish with oil or polyurethane. stabilization turns a piece of wood into a piece of plastic with wood colors. yes it may last forever, but adds weight and the wood no longer looks like wood. unless you have equipment measure moisture content, most stabilization folks won't treat it.

This is 100% oak. Where are you in the world? It appears to be black oak, but that would depend on where you are.
Mississippi, found two different stumps of the same wood (the crosshatch one) and found a log of the other. They are both very dense, I think I'll prob burn up my tablesaw if I keep cutting it. Ha
