Wood vs. Micarta: What's your preference?

Well, check my user name. :)

Actually I like both. On a user knife I prefer micarta, on a handmade knife I prefer wood.

Wood. I understand it's higher maintenance but nothing beats a nice burl.

H/T coiledwire for his far superior pic of our respective sketchen-enhanced Dominos.

This pictures brings me to tears because of it's beauty. SO NICE!!! :)

I love both. With that said there is a slight preference (for me) with canvas micarta. I love the 'patina' and the other attributes already mentioned.

Wood on folders ( Ebony, Kingswood, Cocobolo, Walnut, etc.)

Micarta on fixed blades.Linen or canvas depending on the uses and grip.

I've tried Kinite ( Sp?) recently. Beautiful, dense ( not heavy) , stable stuff. Too slick for me at the grits knife makers have traditionally used. It sure looks good though.

Micarta, leather, wood. In that order if it is a work knife.

A show knife? Fancy wood, linen micarta and leather comes up last, although some knives look great in leather.:)

I have a difficult time making up my mind. I love the look of wood but to me micarta is more practical. I'm currently having a custom camp knife/chopper made up and I specifically asked for two sets of removable scales - one in micarta for when I'm using it and one in wood for show :D

I prefer Micarta. Love the feel and how it has more grip with sweaty hands, also the easiness of washing it clean.
