I don't know what other people think, but my favorite is red cedar, and some types of pine. That's if you're using vertical poles or boards. For a log end target, probably something harder, like oak.
I prefer a log cut, bound round its diameter with metal banding. Suspend from chains, or mount as you wish. Make sure it is a good 8-10 inches in thickness for durability..
