wood?

If there is a woodcrafters store near you that is also a good place.
You can get blocks of cocobolo, bocote, zebra, and many others if you have the ability
to cut them into scales.

As some of the other sites mentioned are good ebay actually has a lot of good wood knife scales pre-cut. The only way to get them cheaper are to buy large hunks of wood and cut them up yourself but I've order plenty of wood scales off of ebay that were great pieces. Be careful with the stabilized wood though; there are only two that I've seen that do really good work stabilizing (there may be more but these are the two that I have been pleased with). One is a guy named Jim that runs the ebay store Staburl; the other I can't remember off the top of my head but for stabilized pieces Jim is great!

If you have the ability to cut your own, it doesn't get much more cheap than free. I have "handled" several of my knives with Osage Orange branches that I found roadside after trimming. Osage doesn't need stabilizing.
