A news story from the land of the long white cloud. Happened last November.
Sounds like it would be the spectator's "worst nightmare", too.
Luckily there were some doctors in the crowd and the guy recovered.

"An unlucky man has been badly injured in a woodchopper's worst nightmare after an axe head went flying into the crowd - and into his groin."

"...the incident happened during a tree event, in which axemen cut small pockets into the side of a tall pole and jam a wooden jigger board into it. They then climb on to the board and chop another pocket, repeating the process until they are several boards up, at which point they chop off the top of the pole. Unfortunately the head flew off one of the competitor's axes and hit a member of the public...''

"He's okay! Fan recovers from groin axe-ident after New Zealand woodchopping show"
"A New Zealand man badly injured when an axe head became embedded in his groin, severing his femoral artery, is recovering in hospital."

Ouch! please recover soon!
On 2nd note, i would be interested to know the brand of that flying axe

That's awful. Glad to hear he's going to be alright though. I'm sure that axe head was pretty sharp too.

I wish we knew the cause of the failure and if the head were pinned.

That is a nightmare. Slicing your femoral artery could easily be a death sentence.

I was invited to watch one of these once- I politely declined out of fear something like this would happen. If you've ever watched these people, you know they swing those heavy axes extremely hard. Always really nervous watching.

Racing, drag racing, wood chopping, etc., what is the most dangerous sport to watch? Thankful he is recovering.

Youth hockey.

And the danger has nothing to do with the play or the equipment.

This was a major factor in my decision years ago to not play youth hockey and only play pond hockey. Those hockey moms are insane!

A man gets a blade embedded in his junk, the press makes puns ("axe-cident"). It happens to a woman, it's a tragedy. Typical sexist trash.

I'm glad to hear he's doing well. How large is the artery that was severed?

The biggest

Fortunately medical staff are always present at events like these.

"A change would be made to the popular event to ensure such an incident could not happen again."

What do they plan to do, move on to Nerf axes and trees?

Maybe turn the contestants around so that they're not swinging their axes towards the audience?

"A Department of Labour spokeswoman said a full investigation would be conducted and may take up to six months to complete."

That's government red tape for ya. The "investigation," report, and recommendations could probably be completed by one of the axe men in about 10 minutes.
