"Woodchopper's Worst Nightmare"

I'd rather be broke & have my junk in tact, than have lots of money & be injured.

Imagine sitting there, rooting on the contestants, maybe talking to a bud or your wife, then all of the sudden you barely see this object coming at you, sounds like a helicopter, and shaboom - right in the junk - and you happen to catch it bit side first of course, couldnt be poll first.

Damn that would suck.

Some speculation about the prevention of similar accidents: "...might call for erecting nets for wood chopping events... there is another possibility that the spectator area around future wood chopping events might be altered... need to increase distance between the wood chopping and the spectators..."

Following the accident, there are new rules for pinning axe heads in New Zealand, now requiring two pins:

"...Tension pins must be applied in such a manner as to include the axe head, axe handle and wedge... Two tension pins shall be used. See diagram.... Only tension pins shall be used. Wire nails etc. no longer acceptable... The tension pin shall be 5.mm in diameter and be longer than the total thickness of the axe head... These rules are subject to change but are in response to a serious accident at the Christchurch A&P Show. Some are at the insistence of OSH..."

Steve, you are the man!

What are the going to use for nets? Kevlar? Aircraft cable?

Just goes to show that even a pro can have an equipment failure. We all need to remember to always be mindful of where your axe head's momentum would take it in the event of a failure. I was criticized a little bit a couple years ago at a big camp out. We had just used a chainsaw to cut a big dead pine into chunks. It was enough wood for several fires for a couple nights. Like five guys grabbed some of my axes and went to splitting rounds. They were just haphazardly splitting away in any and all directions. I told them all stop and line up, facing away from camp. Then I got criticized for telling other guys how to do something. I told them they can chop however the hell they want as long as they aren't using my tools. So, they lined up. At that point, I really didn't care if they were pissed at me. Stupid hurts.

The commands for the M3mphis SAFETY FORMATION for wood splitting facing away from crowd:

Fall in; At double arm intervals, Dress right, Dress; Arms downward , move; Secure axes; Begin splitting.
