I couldn't seperate the pix and then still be able to post, but in the top pic of the three below is one beautiful piece of wood that I have often wondered as to its fate.
It looks excellently seasoned and I believe it would've made some of the most beautiful handles we've yet to see.
If I'm not mistaken the khukuri laying on top of it is the Sherpa Khukuri that Bill says is the epitome of what all khuks should be.
The more I look at it the more it has grown on me over the years, but I still like the old fully curved models the best.

Yvsa,
I like the looks of that khukuri also. I wonder what the possiblity of getting some of these made would be? I know I'd buy one.

The problem is there are no kamis left who know how to make one ( that anyone knows of ). Failing that, there aren't any Sherpa khuks to be found to take apart and figure out how they did it.

Bill has wanted to do a Sherpa khuk since I've known him and even tried to buy one back that got sold long ago. There's a diference how they attach the buttpiece - something of a "z" fastener from what he tells me.

I've always wondered about the different buttcap on the sherpa model since I first looked at it in the FAQ page a while ago... Having said that, pardon my ignorance, but it is the buttcap the only difference?

I compared the outline of the sherpa khuk to a few of the ones I have, and the closest match to the bend of the blade is the 16.5" chiruwa AK by Bura. The belly of the sherpa blade is wider though.

The handle is quite short compared the newer ones we now see. It seems that the sherpa khukuri is between 15" and 17" long. Is this close?

Bill will be back online the 28th or 29th if things go as planned. You'll have to ask him as I already told the extent of my knowledge.

Keep asking questions. Maybe everyone will learn something new.

If Uncle Bill could ever get these made again, I'd sure buy one. It would be nice to know the specs on this baby.
Cheers, Mark

Yvsa,

Your Sherpa khuk is beautiful and so is that chunk of wood. I may have a purpose for it, if you don't...;)

Dan, I'm sorry but I'm afeared you mis-read the original post.:( The khuk and chunk of wood aren't mine, not even sure where they reside or whom they belong to.
I cropped the pic from the H.I.Website or the FAQ's as I have long lusted after that chunk of wood and slowly came to lust for the khuk as well.
I've always liked the shorter handle and unusual buttcap though.:o

BTW, I haven't forgotten the chunk of Bois D'Arc and will get a round tuit one of these days.;)
I wonder if I could chop a small place on the side, sapwood only, and print your address there and if that would be acceptable to the USPS?
Sure would save a lot of trouble trying to pack it.
Sure would make a postal inspector scratch his head if it was opened for inspection though, woodn't it?;) :D

That khukuri lives with Ray Chiappelli. It was used on a regular basis until Kancha Kami died, then Ray put it into retirement.
