Hi, Yvsa:
Yes, you are correct. Actually, my "viking" (Holland) side is from my mother, my dad's side is English, German, Scottish, and Polish.
In Eirik the Red's Saga and the Vinland Sagas, There is mention of one of my ancient Norse ancestors, Eyolf Saur. Eyolf is killed unjustly by Erik, and thus Eric was banished from Iceland (they had a Law counsil called the "Thing," very much like the Great Council here). Then he comes to the new world.
My Lakota Sioux buddy, Steve Paul, has east coast native relatives and friends who are also light in skin, hair and eyes. They tell stories of the visitations of white men coming here from europe since the 900's, and steadily thereafter until Columbus showed up to mess with trade and such.
Also, the Micmac tribes (who fought the proto-Iriqois tribes out of their territory)in Canada have elevated one of their tribe to hero status for his discovery of the viking landings. Their detailed legends had histories tell of the vikings meeting the natives.
The natives of this land and their light-skinned brothers from across the sea had much in common, such as a general tribal way of living, a diverse pantheon of goddesses and gods, concepts of ancestry&family, the soul, an enjoyment of sport, and curiosity for new people and experiences, (not the fear or hate that would come later w/ contact with "organized" societies).
Ask me about the story of "Thunderstones" sometime. It's a really good story that illustrates the coming together of these people, and how the meeting was so prophetic for both. Good stuff.
Sunna shine sky-gold on you and yours, Yvsa.
