As was mentioned earlier, it's Yellow Heartwood.
I've always wanted to see one with some milage on it to see how the wood changes, but I've only seen them in un-used condition.

Rhododendron looks a lot like azalea

Yeah, we used to have both, and my wife would get frustrated that I'd mix them up.
But our azaleas were all right next to the house and were killed by snow/ice "avalanches" off the roof, so at least I have less chance of messing up.
