I pounced on this large Ray Cover locking folder when I found it up for sale years ago, in large part because of the wood on this one. I'm not sure what type of wood it is, as that wasn't specified in the listing when I came across it. But it looks awesome and the warmth and texture of the wood feels great in the hand. Ray Cover used stabilized spalted maple in some smaller versions of this pattern, with the density and figuring of the grain looking very similar - I have one of those. In appearance, I'm thinking this one might also be spalted maple, though it's not obvious to me as to whether it's stabilized or not. It feels more natural in surface texture as compared to his other stabilized handles, which feel much smoother - often typical of stabilized wood. Whatever it is, it's a strong favorite among my accumulation of wood-handled knives.
