The thread about making a living in the woods got me thinking about my younger years and the time spent wandering the wilderness areas in SW Virginia. Many of these areas once held farms and homesteads & many of the trees that once made up their orchards have left their offspring there.
Walnuts, cherries, apples, dewberrys, currents, blackberries, pears-- all found growing wild. One of my favorites is wild strawberries- manywalks have been halted to sit in an overgrown hayfield and eat little wild berries.
An untapped resource in a time of need or just a pleasant break- watch for birds gathering in trees-- might be ripe fruit to be had.
