Woods knife carry?

Depends on the area. Hiking trails with more people than critters - Flock G23 on right hip and Fallkniven F1 on left. Deep woods with more critters than people - River Redhawk 4" barrel converted to 454 casually on right hip, Fallkniven F1 on left, and sometimes an Estwing camp hatchet at the small of my back. Sometimes a Leuku replaces the F1.

I strap my medium to large knife to my pack, either a light carry pack or day pack. I keep a smaller 3 to 3.5 incher crossdraw on my left side. Rick Lowe is great at custom cross draw sheaths and strap on the pack sheaths!

I don't like stuff hanging on my neck (I'm not saying it's a bad carry method, it just doesn't work well for me), so I usually keep my knife on my belt and carry my gun in a chest holster I had made (inspired on WWII tanker's holster). I also carry my knives in pockets quite often (I don't like having stuff on my belt when carrying a heavy pack), I use dangler sheaths and stick them in my pocket.

I hook the sheath onto my belt, then slide the sheath into my pocket. Keeps it in place and conceals it. Probably won't work with longer knives though.

On hikes, my handgun resides in a holster in the main compartment of my HPG chest pack, with a Camillus Barbarian attached upside-down via a Tek-Lok to the left-hand strap, or to a backpack strap if I'm wearing one. I used to have the gun holstered IWB at about three o'clock with a folder clipped inside my left front pants pocket, and later went to a sheathed folder on my belt. Switching to a fixed blade coincided with buying the HPG pack.

Around my neck. I too carry a firearm and a reload on my belt most all of the time. I carry my knife around my neck to avoid any more weight on my hips. It always some form of Mora either No 1, Bushcraft Black, or Companion MG. Occasionally a 2/0 if I think I can get by with less knife. Even the Bushcraft is comfortable to carry despite being heavier if you double strand the paracord around your neck.

I just carry a pocket knife or SAK, and then a small fixed blade knife in my pack or on my belt. A big knife like that is just too heavy for simply walking through the woods hiking. If you are thinking defense, the gun is as far as you should go. A knife is probably not going to do anything for you. Learn to do everything with a jackknife, and you will thank yourself for the extra weight.

Same here (almost). A Vic Farmer and an Ahti Tikka. Both on belt. The blade on the Tikka is not longer than the Farmer's spearpoint.

With me, it all depends on the woods. If I am walking around the woods in the Eastern USA, then a Glock 26 or S&W Scandium revolver (weight is an issue), a pocket knife such as a SAK or Stockman, and either a 4 to 4 1/2" bladed fixed blade, or a large folder. If I am in Alaska, a Scandium framed S&W 44 Mag is minimum for a handgun, and usually I will have a short barreled shotgun with slugs or a rifle. I gave up on the really large knives years ago as being impractical. The Mora knives others have mentioned are nice enough and I like the bright colors. But, a Buck or Kershaw fixed blade will do nicely, as well.

I suppose in a life and death emergency, such as in man vs Grizzly, one would not even notice the tremendous recoil in a super light weight 44 mag.
