I went out earlier today to gather up some materials for an upcoming fire starting demonstration next weekend. We are supposed to have a few days of rain this week, and it's really coming down right now. I just spent some time wondering around gathering up some Paper-Bark Maple bark, Cedar bark, various seed pods, and some dry grasses and stuff. My tool of choice for the Day was the BK7 and I took some more random pictures and some photos for the website while I was out.

I was down on the river.

I found some fungi.

and some seedy scat.

The BK7 cut a lot of brier vines.

Found several spots where Muskrats had sat and dined on muscles.

Found some beaver sign too I think.

There are several kinds of berries still out yet.

I found an old turtle shell. Most of the outer layer was gone but one section was left. I had never realized it was translucent.

I stopped for a break of bread and cheese and enjoyed the view across the river for a bit. About then a coast guard vessel came down the river.

Then continuing on I found some small Hickory nuts.

I liked the weathered lines on this old root section of a tree.

While I was kneeling that pic this little guy came crawling across my leg, I wish I had been ready for it and gotten a better photo

I'm still trying to learn what this is.

In a clearing on a shelf above the river I found some wild edibles, some Ocoee and wild onions.

And quite a bit of some not so edible nightshade.

By then the rains had started, and it was time to head home.

Awesome pics, bro. Lots of good stuff in those pics. You should have gotten one of yourself while I was talkin' to you on the phone, that way, I could have been in the pics too.:p

What was the beaver signs, I couldn't see anything in the water. What was I supposed to be looking for? Scat? Paw Prints?

Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it !

Lol, that's hilarious. I didn't even have the tripod with me tough, i was traveling light on equipment because I knew i would be packing stuff back out.

See the stick in that pic with all ther bark chewed off of it? That's usually a sign of beavers. We have several of them around here so I've never been sure if muskrats do that or not.

Ah, I saw that, but I figured trolling motor blade. Ok, good call, I'll be looking out for that more often, then.

We gots river otters here that leave muddy prints on submerged stones. Thats what I was looking for.

Never seen any otters here accept in the aquarium. But I find a lot of sticks with the bark chewed off all up and down the river and at the mouths of larger creeks

Mist, great shots once again. A dollar to a doughnut says this shot ends up on Moose's computer as his new 2011 wallpaper or screen saver . . . :)
Thanks for taking us out with you today.
Be safe.

Awesome pics!!!

that squiggly, fuzzy, doodad, plant picture is simply amazing.. !!

Thanks man, I think so too, I must have a dozen photos of it from different hikes trying to learn what it is. It puts of pods a lot like milk weed pods and has heart shaped leaves.

I think it's a lot like cattail in that it's a good flash tinder that needs to be mixed with other materials. It burns as fast as thistle seeds.

A blade that is meant to be used getting used. Wonderful pics, too. When I was out hunting today there was quite a few branches I saw that could have been cleared.. too bad I needed to keep myself quiet. :p

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed the photos. Yep, Tennessee River a little ways down stream from Williams Island.
